Hello everyone,
I drive a '98 3.4L 4WD 4runner. She's at 350k and still going strong :thumb:
I'm having weird brake problems and I'm pretty stumped on this issue.
So I just replaced my rear shoes on my drum brakes, cleaned everything back there and made it look gooooood. I then adjusted the shoes through the adjuster port and got them where they ought to be.
I did this because I was having almost no braking power, it was IMPOSSIBLE to make the ABS engage and I was downshifting along with braking to stop, not very safe. I decided on the rear shoes because I would pull my parking brake while rolling and nothing would really happen, so naturally that must have been the culprit.
Replacing the shoes did help, I've got more bite now but nothing near what it should be. My pedal is firm but not too firm, my power booster seems to work (did a vacuum test).
I don't feel like I have air in the lines, the pedal isn't mushy. I simply push the brakes, it starts to stop, but when I really crank down on the pedal it still just glides to a stop.
I do however have some vibrations from the front brakes when I'm stopping. Are my front brakes bad? Doesn't most of the stopping power come from the front end? Would that explain this problem?
Is it possible oil or something got in the front end or they glazed over or my brake fluid is shot?
I'm a pretty handy guy and like DIY projects and try to fix things myself before I take it to a pro. I've learned a lot in my life that way so I'd like a crack at this issue before taking it in to a shop.
Does anyone have any ideas?
