No compression in my lil 22RE

I decided to buy myself a 1st gen "beater truck" since I loved the removable top so much. My buddy sold me one that just had a rebuild less than 20k ago.

Well I was driving to work one day and was trying to pass someone (revving a lil high) and once I got in the parking lot everything was shaking. Turns out I lost all compression in cylinder 1 and 2.. 130ish in 3 and 4. I tried limping it home, but I overheated on the way and had to get it towed.

I'm in the process of replacing the HG and buying a head from ted at EB.
But before I spend around over $700 in this top end rebuild, I want to make sure it was the Head gaskets fault or the heads.. because I don't want to spend all this money and then end up to be something in the block or bottom end. Does it sound like the top end failed? (This is the first time I've ever done anything with engines before, so wish me luck)

Does it turn over at all ? If you're getting consistent white smoke out the tailpipe, it's HG . Look in your radiator for the mixing of oil and rad. fluid , the tell tale sign of a bad HG is a 'milkshake' in your radiator .

Since you're pulling the head and doing HG work , I would also replace your timing chain , chain guides , tensioner , water pump , belts, and hoses . No sense in doing all that HG work and putting old parts back in there with the amount of disassembly you will be into it for ...

Was the motor making any strange noises that might lead you to believe the bottom end was at fault?

Why are you going with a new head? How/why do you believe it is bad? Do you know it is not rebuildable?

20k on a rebuilt motor is super low--if it was done right.

If it was me, I would pull the motor out of the truck. It is not that hard to do and if it turns out to be only a top end job everything is much easier to get to on a stand then to work on in the engine bay. And with it on a stand it will be easy to flip it over, remove the oil pan and look around for additional problems.

Either way, I wouldn't be buying parts until after I pulled the head so I knew exactly what I was getting into.

Good luck, and post some pics of what you find!

Have you already torn it apart? A leakdown test would have told you what failed, but if you've already got the head off it's too late for that.

Sounds like a headgasket, anyway. Any recourse on the shop that did the rebuild?

Thanks for all the replys! Yes the motor did turn over, no power, and very rough and noisy. Driveable in 4low. No milkshake in radiator but coolant isn't in there long enough for it to mix. Is there a way to tell if chain or tensioner is bad? Chain guides are plastic and still intact.

@redtintop
It wasn't making any noises before the blow, but it was running too rough for me to tell after the blow. I'm going with a new head because PO used shitty parts and I want to make sure I use quality. So I'm going with EBs street rv head and cam for extra power. And yes 20k is super low but that's what I get for trusting my buddies judgement on Chinese parts.

I just pulled the head last night, my bad, didn't do leak down test.

headgasket between 1 and 2 is completely gone :*( don't know where that piece went!

Timing sets are cheap. So's the water and oil pump. Engnbldr can hook you up with good front end stuff that'll last 200,000 instead of 20,000.

Is it stuck to the bottom of the head?

What chinese parts did he put in the head?

If he made poor choices in the top end, why not the bottom? Cylinders don't look great on my small laptop screen, hopefully better in real time.

Nice cam choice, good choice.

Crazy not to replace the timing kit (metal guides) and pumps when you are already in there. Cheap insurance.
