I am trying to solve some issues on my new 4Runner, and at 334,000 she's begging to show a few. She's a 1992 3vze 5 speed SR5.
The starter would work very inconsistently - meaning that maybe out of 10 times turning the ignition to start one of them would be successful. Now, the starter will not turn at all when keyed.
The starter relay in the engine fuse box does click, so I assume power is reaching the relay. The radio and clock turn off when I turn the ignition to start. The charge gauge on the dash seems to be showing sufficient voltage, but I haven't checked anything with a DVOM.
I was thinking it was bad starter contacts but the the starter always turns over fine if I jump a wire from the + terminal of the battery to the starter.
Can anyone suggest other things to look at/test?
Thanks!!
