No more V8s, no more buying 4runner

Toyota made a great mistake not putting the 5.7L V8 in the new 5th generation. Now my only option is to buy a Sequoia to enjoy the latest advancement in V8 and 6-speed AUTO.

No tree huggers!!!:bash:

I am sure the 5.7 was never even in the cards. The 4.6 V8 now in the Tundra/Sequoia would more than likely have been/will be the V8 of choice for Toyota.
 
It's a shame the 4Runner doesn't have a V8 option. That makes the least expensive Toyota SUV with a V8 the Sequoia, but you can't find one of those on a dealer's lot for MSRP less than $45,000, and most are over $50,000. Same issue with the Lexus GX - it doesn't matter what base price is, as it's on the lots with an MSRP above $50,000.

The Tundra is priced more reasonably, but not everybody wants a full-size pickup as a daily driver.
 
4Runner fits nicely in most std size garages, Tundra is too long. Too bad, Toyota is doing potential 4runner buyers a dis-service by not offerring the V8 options.

Must be because the green tree hugging generation have gotten into Toyota management. We must vote with our purchasing powers to educate these mis-guided youths.
 
Its not about treehuggers, its about dollars and cents! When auto sales were booming everyone could afford a diverse lineup that catered to certain niches and to hardcore enthusiasts but those days are likely gone forever, and with them the many options that we have been spoiled into thinking we could get all the time. Toyota is tightening their belt just like everyone else.

So you can either:
A. Buy something else
B. Buy the cheapest 5th Gen 4R and do a 4.6/6sp swap, dont think that a 5.7 would drop in without mods.

Thats my $0.05 (adjusted for inflation)
 
Toyota will put the 4.6l in the 4R, it's just if you can wait the months/years until they do.

I'd be interested in seeing when TRD will come off with a SuperCharger for the new motor.
 
no choice, I am hanging on to my 4runner with 4.7L V8 and then upgrading to either a Tundra or Sequoia with 5.7L V8. There is barely adquate power on the 4.7L V8 to move the 4runner as is. 5.7L would have been nice to have.

Oh well!
 
I'm all for the V8 option, but I wouldn't go so far as to say the V6 is inadequate, especially if you don't tow. There's a whole other thread that turned into a flame war over that topic.

Now a 4-cylinder in the 4Runner... that sounds inadequate to me.

I don't see an economic issue with the concept of additional options, especially if it's an option they already make and put in vehicles coming out of the same plant. On the other hand, it is an economic issue if the V8 doesn't sell well enough to justify putting them on the lots. That doesn't mean it couldn't be made in small quantities or special-ordered, but clearly Toyota has chosen not to deal with it.

IF...
The Sequoia (w/4.6) has Multi-Mode 4wd, so you guys can add that to your list of dreams too to have that with the V8 vice Full Time 4wd. MM 4wd+4.6+6sp=pure win!

Yeah but the Sequoia owner will be dreaming he had a live rear axle instead of IRS. When that Sequoia owner gets stuck on a large obstacle, I'm sure a V6 4Runner with part-time 4WD (5sp) will eventually pass him on the trail and help pull him off of that obstacle. IRS=pure loss!

I agree 100%. Especially when it comes to the center differential. They could easily offer the center differential as an option on the SR5 and Trail edition since all Canadian spec SR5s and Trail Edition coming out of the same factory have a center differential and full-time 4WD standard.
 
I agree with the OP

It is this lack of a V8 option (along with Toyotas refusal to properly fix the sulfur smell from the exhaust problem) that has me leaving Toyota for a V8 powered 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

If that's the thinking, they really need to think again. My 4th gen v8 4runner is the smallest, highest "everyday MPG" vehicle that will comfortably tow my camper, (and it's not a very big camper either). Pushing me into a larger Seq. or Tundra kills more trees driving to work - which I do every day, just so I can get the job done on weekends, and besides I really have no desire to drive something any bigger than the 4th gen anyway (which is another 5th gen problem - more bloat). Nor do I have any desire to own two vehicles just so I can have something reasonably sized for weekdays and powerful enough on weekends. I would sooner give up the camper than do that.

Other cars have that issue too, not just Toyota. My Mazda6 has that too.

I think you misunderstood me. I was saying that IF they put a V8 in it would more than likely be the 4.6, and seeing that the Sequoia has the MM 4wd paired to a 6sp that would be the best of both worlds IF Toyota were to take the 4R in that direction again.

So, 4R+Sequoia drivetrain is what I'm saying here.

Oops! I totally agree with you. I should have directed my comment to the OP. He's the one who wants to buy the IRS Sequoia for it's 5.7L engine and 6sd tranny.
 
I can't believe all the whining over the lack of a V8;relax it will return but for this opening model year Toyota is keeping things a bit simple and cheaper but this 4Runner will only get better.

My first impression of the 4th gens was disappointing but they improved pretty much with every model year. All that unpainted plastic,got a little porky and definelty appealed to the soccer mom crowd and those squared off wheel wells was a put off intially in '02 when the 4th gen appeared but it improved immensily just over the first 3 years.

I'm excited about this new one and I think Toyota won't miss a beat with sales.
