It’s intent is to crack down on the lovely sight of front lawn auto repair.

If you’re just hearing about it now it’s not a big deal to the average wrencher quietly working in their private garage.

If it inspires people to stay away or leave CA, go. Please.

In my personal opinion, this is part of the gentrification process. I mean, I don't like to generalize, but think about it. Who would have the need to work on their vehicles versus those that don't?

Yes, it would be nice to have a house and work in the privacy of a garage, but not everyone can have that 'luxury'...can they? Not everyone can afford the $100+/hr labor cost, not to mention the occasional high mark up on parts.

Living in Cali, I know that the pick'n pull yards are quite popular...wonder how they are going to be affected?

Plus, many of us just like the hobby of working on our own vehicles...unless you have a well lit, ventilated, high ceiling garage...you'll probably be outside in the driveway...

And like Forrest Gump...that's all I have to say about that...

Agreed. Most everyone is trying to get by in this country the best they can. People who make laws like this may be overlooking that fact.

If I want or need to work on my car, I do it in my gravel driveway. That’s cool in Ohio. If it’s fine with the good citizens of Sacramento to be told where they can and can’t do such things, more power to them. Their choice. Maybe Sacramento is a wealthy, upscale place. I don’t know, I’ve never been there. Here, if you live in an exclusive neighborhood, your Homeowners Association would take care of that, not laws.

LOL! It seems a few years ago some auto forum was pissin-n-moanin about this and one guy got a fine. Then recently an automotive magazine website saw it and reported it and it spread to other auto sites and they all re-hashed the same outrage story about govt overeach etc. Nobody bothered to investigate the origin of this county code. That would be an interesting story of what drives a county to impose a harsh rule like that. But that would take some investigative reporting and effort.

I haven’t figured it out or seen any follow up to this but I’m guessing it was due to lots of citizen complaints.

But the problem, in my opinion, is this...once they 'get their foot in the door'...where does it stop? What are the limits and by whose judgement?

This kind of thing is nothing new in Florida, we call them condo commandos.
For the most part if your responsible, clean and your vehicle is not on jack stands for more than a couple days, your not bothered. It also helps to be a good neighbor and let everyone know what's going on with your repair.

But yes, some knuckle heads would take advantage and have a derelict car sitting for months, so I understand ordinances to help guard against this.

The one thing that kills me is people buy a house in the flight path of a small municipal airport that has been in operation for 60 years or more, don't do their due diligence to find out that there is a flight path over their heads, and then try to get said airport shut down. SMH

You also have HOAs where everyone is a code enforcer. Mostly because they have no life and nothing better to do.

A co-worker of mine had a nice Pineapple plant removed because of an HOA. It turned out that a whole new landscaping theme was planned and the treasurer had the inside track for the contractor. Once investigated, it was found out there was several hundred thousand dollars embezzled in many different ways by this treasurer lol.

Property value is a fickle thing, so there should be some restrictions so that everyone can benefit from a nice area. Unfortunately there will always be the power hungry or the corrupt. Kind of like the condescension trolls on this forum.

Agreed. Being a good neighbor, as you mentioned (from both sides, btw) would probably avert 90% of the attitude problems some people have.

It's even older than that. I did a quick search of of the county zoning ordinance history and it looks like similar language has been in the code since 1978.

The law as written is bad, but it's existed for longer than I've been alive and no one follows or enforces it. The sky is not falling, despite what outrage-harvesting clickbait articles might lead people to believe.

I recall there were talk about car technology being too complicated for the average joe, so authorities were going to make it illegal to work on your own car in your own garage. Fast forward to today and it's a reality in Sacramento.
I don't see any reason why that law will stay just in that area too.

I love it when people hundreds of miles away who don't know me decide things must be too difficult for me to understand so they must make a law to save me from myself.
