No tpms in spare tire?

I read somewhere that we have tpms sensor on our spare wheel.

So I bought another trail edition wheel to mount my spare tire on it so I can do proper tire rotation.

Tire shop left me a message to let me know that I don't have any tpms on my spare tire...

Is that normal? Can I bought a tpms sensor from the shop and have it program so the truck read all the 5 tire?

I drove with my spare on for a couple of weeks and the TPMS light did not illuminate on my dash. I would think if one wheel is absent of one that it would trigger the light on the dash.

My 2006 Sport Edition did have a TPMS in the spare, but that spare was exact same tire size and exact wheel as main 4. The spare could be used as part of normal tire rotation maintenance.

I have confirmed on my 2014 Limited, which does have a full size spare, but a "yellow" wheel, DOES NOT have a TPMS in the spare. The yellow wheel would not be intended to be used part of normal tire rotation. I confirmed this with no reading on my ScanGuage II (see other thread about new tire pressure monitoring) and using Techstream to go into the ECU. The ECU does have the capability to have 5 sensors registered and functioning, but at least my Limited does not have the 5th sensor in the spare. Perhaps other trim levels do however.

I am changing over to 17" wheels and new tires in next few weeks and will program a 5th sensor for my new spare.

I thought if the system sensed that one was missing or not working it would trigger the light. Purely speculation on my part though.

No tpms in 5th & yes in 4th ! Light will come on if not in your garage of near home . And lots of posts on this for 5th , not sure it (ecu) handle more than 4 ?

Found a thread of someone successfully added a 5th tpms on his trail ecu.

Anyway, I gave the green light to the tire shop. They will install the tpms and program it in my truck later today.
Will report back.

My 2016 came with 5 TPMS total but I think it might be only in the Limiteds. Almost every time my sensor has triggered...it's the spare.

Back from tire shop, they where not able to add the 5th tpms. Toyota tech said he can't do it since it doesn't come with it like the limited.

But, this guy successfully did it with a trail.

I have a 2014 Limited without the 5th TPMS. However, the ECU will register and read 5 sensors. I would think same ECU is used on all trim levels.

My range was almost 20 miles. Tires and tpms in garage. I could drive 2 towns over and not get the light on. Like that for years. Once I got approximately 20 miles from home the light would come on.

Replaced my tires and wheels 3 days after I bought truck. I left old wheels with tpms sensors in garage. As long as I stayed within approximately 20 miles from home the light never came on. My Tacoma was the same way.

2011 Limited-same. About 15 miles or 20 minutes. Doesn't make sense it's that slow-how will it tell you there is a flat tire in enough time for it to matter?

low tire pressure warning is immediate. inflate and deflate there's no real delay

the delay happens when the computer can't locate a sensor for the first time. I'm not sure the technical reason for this but once that light comes on because it can't sense the sensor - it will come on at startup every time you turn on the vehicle after that

sensor batteries are long lasting and it's not common for sensors to get damaged in the wheels during normal driving. 90% of the time a sensor location failure is due to tire swap and not programming the new TPMS
