Noise after replacing CV Axle

Hey Everyone,

I replaced the PS CV Axle with a New one from NAPA. It went in fine and I did not notice any noise.
I did have to be a little rough with the brakes/spindle assembly to get the old one out.

I took a 1700 mile trip and on the last 50 miles or so started to hear a hum/vibration sound from front end. Sounds like from the PS but hard to be sure

It increases with speed. It does not vary by RPM.

I quick jerk to driver makes it go away for a second.

Swapped tire on the front PS but same sound.

It checked the brake backing plate and it is clear.

A little diff fluid leaked during replacement. Pulled the bottom plug to check for metal. It had some sludge but no metal. Refilled- no change


I did notice that the brake disk itself is loose with the tire off. I can rotate it a little until it hits the lugs. Not sure if that is normal.

I found a couple similar threads but no answer.
Any help would be appreciated.

Any chance you didn't torque down the spindle nut to the recommended torque value? I think it's 173 ft lbs and more or less could cause the bearing to wear in a hurry. If that's the case it would explain why jerking the wheel made the noise stop.

I'm far from an expert but just taking a shot.
 
Possibly, I was ball parking the torque with my cheap harbor freight wrench.
I am leaning towards the bearing after reading some posts on 120 forum.

I'm going to focus on the wheel bearing.

Looking at a bunch of posts it does sound like the the fact that I can yank the wheel and the noise goes away points to a bearing issue.

It would make sense that I somehow messed up the PS since I was in there recently for the Axle.

I suspect the PS, and I can make the whine go away by yanking to driver.
So I am loading the PS and it stops.

This seems to conflict with some sites that say the problem should get worse when you load the side with a bad bearing.

It may be a coincidence and my DS bearing just decided to go.

If anyone has exp with diagnosing this, please let me know.

I think you're right in looking towards the bearing assembly first. It's also not far fetched to have the drivers side bearing go bad even though the hum subsides when making fast right hand turns.

As an example, this past Fall, I was getting a vibration and hum from the passenger side. The hum would quiet down on fast right hand turns. I pulled the rotor and caliper last week and felt how gritty the bearing felt when turning the hub by hand. I replaced the hub and hearing, took a test drive and all was well for the day. The next day the hum and vibration was back and again subsided on fast right turns. I though I screwed something up with the bearing replacement so I took it to my mechanic for his evaluation today. He took a test drive, said it was a bearing but focused on the drivers side instead. He said the bearing felt gritty on that side and he replaced the assembly. Now everything is smooth and quiet again. He said he has seen before where you think it's one side and the other is the problem. The only way to be sure is to pull the rotor and caliper and spin the hub by hand. In my example I'm thinking both my left and right bearings were failing but I only worked on the passenger side since the hum went away on right turns.

Did you use the hub/bearing combo that's pre-pressed? Blue-Pit
I'm thinking $230 isn't bad not to have to deal with the separating and pressing.

I've seen sets on ebay, which are not pressed, for under $150 for both sides.
Assuming they are not as good a quality.

search this site, there are several members that sell the hubs. cheaper than your links I believe as well.
 
For my hub and bearing, I went to my local parts store. They had Moog brand in stock and retailed for $130 ish per side. I'm there enough for other projects that they gave me a discount. I paid $99 which included them pressing the hub and bearing as well as the seal. I simply took off my old assembly so they could reuse the four bolts. The passenger side I installed myself but since it was so cold today I took the truck to my mechanic and he did the drivers side for $120 in labor. So parts cost $198, labor was $120 for a total of $318 for both sides. The $99 per hub assembly that I paid is about the same price as Rockauto.
