noise comming from the rear of my 4runner limited

Drove the car in AM parked in the garage around lunch , went to play golf with the neighbor ( he was driving) came home open the garage and I hear this chirping noise coming from the rear ( around left rear wheelbase) I turned the car on and off and the noise stopped. Any ideas what this could be?

Did you leave the keys in the ignition, in the garage, while you were gone? That is the ONLY chirpping noise that I have ever heard, so far, on my SR5.

I heard my Limited do this as well - I made it go away doing the same thing you did - a couple days later I was thumbing through the owners manual and saw on page 22 a section titled "For Your Information" - The second bullet says "Noise from under vehicle after turning off the engine". I read this and it makes sense to me that this is what i heard because the sound was very close to the fuel filler/tank area. It says "Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check, and it does not indicate a malfunction". Hope this helps!!

I saw you post and was going to tell you that, but you said it was a chirping noise and I figured the sound (from the book) would be more of a metalic mechanical noise. Interesting, could you provide a little more detail on what it really sounded like?

Yes, and I wouldn't pay attention to the "five hours" part. I think it all depends on the conditions of the environment. For example, if it's a hot day, it may run the check sooner than on a cold day. I think the manual is supposed to say something about the sound occuring UP to five hours after the engine is turned off - meaning that it will not perform the check AFTER five hours. That's just how I interpreted it though.

Awesome site. Just heard the sound last night, and was getting ready to call the dealer, but then found the answer here. What I heard was kind of a faint buzzing sound coming from underneath the rear of the 4runner, like a release valve, so it makes perfect sense that it may be the fuel evaporation leakage.

I agree with adoihcj, I think it depends on weather, I've had my 4runner for two months and had never heard the sound, but last night got home and about four and a half hours later, I freaked out when I heard it as I stepped in the garage, at that time it was in the upper 20's. The sound went on for about 30 seconds then it went off, don't know how long it had been going before I walked into the garage. It probably happens quicker when the temperature is warmer.

Thanks to this forum.....went to my TE and heard the noise from the rear of the suv. It was not on and had not driven for about 9 hrs.

OMG! You guys rock.

I was just going to do a last check in my garage before going to bed and my truck was making a humming sound like the electric gas pump. It came from the rear.

Funny thing is the keyless ignition switch was lighted up while the humming was going.

I started the truck and turned it off and the sound went away. I freaked out thinking the truck I just bough already had issues.

I went to get in my 4Runner this morning to head to work and I heard a buzzing noise coming from under the rear of the vehicle. It reminded me of the sound that you hear from a battery charger. I started to freak out because we've been having problems with our other vehicle (a Chevy Cruze) and I had just brought that vehicle back yesterday from a repair. While the Cruze was in the shop I was thinking about how fortunate we've been with the Toyotas that we've owned...so my heart sank a little when I heard the noise this morning. I'm glad that I found this site and I appreciate that you posted the likely source of the noise. Thanks!

Yeah, with keyless entry on my high-tech German machine, it recognizes the device as you near the car and starts running all kinds of preparatory boot-up stuff...little hums and buzzes getting ready for me to touch the door and it opens, seat and steering wheel adjust out of the way, noises behind the dash...etc. It's wild.

I imagine some of that type of thing occurs in the Toyota's with keyless fob access...just much less noticeable.

As long as the ejector seat doesn't go-off accidentally, am good...

I had an odd resonant buzz at my rear also ;~) .... turned out the chrome exhaust finisher was loose.

Another chump here... Man this had me freaked as well. I happened to just be around my 4runner working in the driveway about 5 hours after I'd parked it. Heard this pump and hissing noise. WTF? I thought for sure there was some fuel pump issue or similar. If the 4runner had a leaky load leveling air suspension this is exactly what it would sound like. Anyhow after about 5 minutes it went away. I finally got time to check the forum and sure enough.. normal. Must be some sort of small pump and pressurization test. Sigh, another silly thing to go wrong about 15 years from now.
