Non Drill roof rack (no silicone)

not sure if i did this right but i am currently installing the victory full length rack put the butyl under the silicon washer and am getting ready to place the rack soon as my 3rd and 4th hand get here

probably could have cleaned it up a bit better but don’t currently have any alcohol laying around so i just wiped it as best i could.
since it’s not actual silicon going on didn’t think it would be too bad.

My wife ordered a Sherpa rack for me for Father's Day. I'm just gonna have the Sherpa guys install it so I don't have to F with all this.

While I'm in this thread, why is it that the factory racks don't seem to have these issues? I hear this sort of thing all the time with aftermarket racks, but that the OEM racks from the factory are GTG.

Why is that? Do they do an amazing job of sealing them or something? IIRC, the TRDP racks are port-installed, so they can't even be factory...

Check out this review here. Looks like the ARB uses a rubber gasket that fits over the channel and mount holes.

The OEM racks use a rubber seal and thread locker. Rubber is more resistant to general wear, temperature changes, and won't deform, degrade or shrink overtime like silicone does.

Where did you buy the washers? All the ones I find at local hardware stores are too flimsy and not thick enough.

You can get those washers from McMaster-Carr. They are about $8.00 for 25 of them.

i had the same issue i went to mcmaster carr website as everyone else recommended paid $15 after shipping. if you were local i’d give you the rest since i only used 8.

Received the spacers from RA 2 weals ago and I finally was able to swap the barrel spacers on my Prinsu...I added butyl tape on the mounting points too.

What are those RA spacers machined out of? I just took my Rhino Rack Backbone off and resealed it just in case, but the feet don't fit very well in the roof ditches. I did some measuring and the ditches themselves are very inconsistant width-wise. One was 25+mm, one was 23+mm and the other two were in the 21mm range. It's tough to get it to sit down in the ditch without gouging the sheet metal. I did grind on it a bit and enlarged the mounting holes, but it doesn't meet my OCD standards. Maybe some spacers to get it out of the ditch will help.

I don't have any plans to mount a roof top tent up there but with how much shifting, vibration, flexing there can be when you off-road I wonder if that can lead to any cracking or durability issues with plastic.

It's been less than a year, but I have used it a few times already with a RTT. I can't comment on the durability yet.

I installed my prinsu a month ago with the RA spacers. They seem to be holding up just fine so far.

My question for you all that have done that, what else did you need to use to seal up the rack? Or were the mounts themselves good enough?

It’s not done yet, still have to make the faring and get some stuff powder coated but it’s close!
