NOOB owner!

I'm a PROUD new 2007 T4R owner and new to these forums.

- Scored a 2007 V6 4WD, leather and 19K miles for just over $20K. I think thats a great price.

I only got 1 key and FOB but correct me if I'm wrong; you can get a key anywhere but need the dealer to program. They key FOB you can DIY...right?

Welcome. You might want to check with the previous owner. The 2007 was issued with two key fobs and two keys.

Bought the car off a car lot. I'll correct myself - I have the plastic valet key but still only have 1 key and FOB. So question still stands, key must be programmed at dealer, and FOB can be DIY, right?

Ok, Ebay has key blanks and FOB's. My ACE hardware recently started cutting keys with chips and programming them. As far as the FOB's go some of the Ebay FOB's claim they include programming instructions: http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_nkwZtoyotaQ204runnerQ20keysQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZR40QQ_mdoZ

It has been my experience that if you take a key to be programmed or go to the dealer for FOB programming take all the keys & FOBs with you. I don't know much about beyond it's pretty easy to accidentally de-program the other keys/FOBs while programming the new ones.

Actually, for security reasons, any keys and fob that are NOT resynchronized when a new one is added wwill no longer work with your car.

That way, a key and/or fob floating around in someone else's pocket (like the previous owner) will become useless.

Two master keys, black key heads. One valet key, gray key head. Two remote fobs.

It cannot be any key, unless it has transponder capability for the engine immoblilizer system, but it will need to be programmed to the vehicle. A regular cut key from the hardware store will only unlock the doors. The engine will crank, but won't run. (I've tried it.)

You can try Streetkeys.com to get a transponder key.

Yes, remote can be DIY programmed. Key must be programmed by dealer.

In my case I can go to my ACE Hardware. They have recently purchased the equipment to do the key programming.

I think there are becoming options besides the dealers.

Extra Keys

I had another key made at a local store like Home Depot that has no chip. I put it in a magnetic box and then hid it on the frame. I then put the valet key in the locked glove box. If I need a key I can get the one off the frame and open the glove box with it and then have access to everything in an emergency.

Bought a key and remote off Ebay. Received the remote today. Programmed it myself; open door, insert-remove key, close open-door, close-open door, insert-remove key, insert-remove key, foot on head, ear on nose, blaha blah blah. Procedures work like a charm though..
