Noob Question about 4wd Transformation

didn't we just have a thread about this where we all said the exact same thing to the other owner. Do yourself a favor and search the forum, so that you can see the answer a few hundred times and get the point.
 
That's why I titled it "noob." I have pretty much no clue what I'm talking about when it comes to aftermarket upgrades. That's why I asked you. To the people who responded in a civil way, thank you. To those trying to be *holes, I'm glad picking on me makes you sleep better at night. Thank you chaz for the link...you have been most helpful! In the near future, I still want to do the swap and I will use the tips everyone has left for me. Until then, what crazydubmans has done is enough of a solution for me.

Okay, why not install a rear locker and see if that's good enough for you. If you still want more, then you could always revisit the idea of converting to 4wd or buying another 4wd 4Runner instead.

Either way, I get the feeling that you take good care of your vehicles and it would make you very nervous about buying a used 4Runner because you don't know if the prior owner cared for it as well as you do yours. Well, I can certainly understand that...but at the same time there are guys out there who are meticulous about taking care of their vehicles. If you decide to buy a used 4wd, then you just have to find someone selling privately and talk to him enough to see if he's the type to completely take care of his vehicle. If you find someone like that, then don't hesitate to buy his 4Runner.

If I had to pick one person on this forum who's 4Runner I would buy without hesitation, it would be JA. You can tell from reading his posts (and his webpage) that he takes really good care of both 3rd and 4th gen 4Runners.

Meticulous is a great word that would describe how I am towards my 4Runner. I have wanted an air locker for a while but can't narrow it down on which one I'd get. ARB makes a pretty nice product, but I don't know if there is something better out there. Also, when using an air locker, if I keep it engaged for a while, will that use up all of my air? How does all of that work?

What kind of wheeling do you plan on doing?

I have a 2wd with locker and I do pretty well.

You have ask yourself what do you plan to do before deciding on what mods to do further.

I want to be able to do what crazydubman can do. His 4Runner would make many Wranglers shiver. That's what I want.

Todd aka crazydubman has a v8 2wd with SAW/OW suspension, 33 AT's Tires, TC spindles and RB body lift.

Other then those mods he is stock, he plans on a locker and 35 inch tires.

Could I get similar results with a cornfed 3/2 lift plus a body lift and some Bridgestone AT Revo 2s? Or do I need some of those cool looking shock/spring things?
 
Cornfed is a spacer lift so it will give you a lift but Todd is running a full suspension change, non of the stock suspension is on his Runner.

Body lift will give you alittle more clearance for your tires over being at stock height.

Todd is running 1.5 inch body lift with a 2.5 inch suspension lift and a addition 4 inches from his spindles.

When you install a arb air locker, you also need to have a air compressor installed to activate the locker and to maintain air pressure to the locker.

You can get a similar result but being through the spacer to CO road, I recommend if you can afford it just with a full suspension setup. You will love the ride on/off road over the stock suspension. :bigok:

Also to do the more extreme flexing a full suspension is needs.

I have recently been collaborating with IPOR about going through with a SAS 4WD conversion. They can do it and do it right, but I need at least 4.5-5.5 inches of lift. How can I achieve a full 4.5-5.5 inches of lift, getting the extra ground clearance while also leveling out the truck? Would I need to keep a cornfed 2/1 lift, a 1.5 inch body lift, and install something like the 2.5/2 suspension from SAW? Would that result in a 6/4.5 overall lift? Or should I take a different approach?

think a lot of custom work, the cornfed plus SAW wont work (as far as i know). You can look at Fabtech, they might have a 6" lift for your year, but i havent checked them for a while. I would say go with a custom setup since you say money isnt an issue.

Here is a SAS project thread completed by IPOR. You will need a whole different type of suspension from anything discussed here.

Bring your checkbook....you're talking about a completely one-off solution. In addition, you lose ABS, ATRAC, VSC. Lockers will make up for that offroad, but not on the highway.

You WILL need the 1.5" BL for space for the 3-link brackets.

If you want a reliable, lifted, 4wd truck...find a selling 4WD owner off the boards, sell yours, mod your new one...done.
