Noob Question...

Hi Guys, First time here.

My Lovely Girl friend of 3 years has a 2005 4runner v8 with 112,000 miles. She has owned it since it was new. The past 2 1/2 years i've been doing regular maintence on it. I basically took it over for her, so the truck is well maintained, looks good runs well, 85% of it's miles have been NJ & upstate NY highway miles.

So far no Major issues. I have just come to reliaze that the V8 has a timing belt. After doing a search I see it's weel over do for replacement.

Does anyone have any sugguestions about a Mechanic that is reputable located around Staten Island, NY (NYC). Any idea what the cost would be? I'm sure the dealer will be over $1k. Should I have the cam rollers, water pump & tensioners replaced as well?

I wanna get all my info before I mention this to her, I don't want her to be woried or busting my balls about it endlessly either.

Thank you.

Call around and get prices. It's been awhile since I had a Toyota that needed the belt done but if I recall, it cost me in the neighborhood of $400 by the local dealer when I was in York, PA and that included the water pump and tensioners.

I had the same 4runner and I never did the timing belt. It was on my mind. We had 150,000 miles on it when we traded it in because of a different issue.

The dealers in Portland have quoted be about $660 for a new timing and serpentine belt plus water pump. I would recommend using an oem belt.

I know most people do the water pump and serpentine belt at the same time but if the water pump 's not leaking and the belts no cracked don't waste your money replacing good parts. I have 180K on my originals and the belt is just starting to show wear so I'll replace it soon and the water pump is still fine. Spend that money on something useful.
