Hope to see you all out for this... For those that just want the key details... the short story:
The trail I plan to run is Long Canyon 4WD Trail (and North Shanty 4WD Trail afterwards if there is time).
Date: Sat. 5/19/2018
8:00AM Meet up @ Starbucks at 195 Placerville Rd, Folsom, CA 95630 (its right off HWY50)
8:15AM head up the hill
Approx 9:30AM arrive at staging / air-down spot at intersection of Silver Fork Rd. and Forest Service Rd 11N18 (38°44'51.1"N 120°15'40.8"W) (this is just past China Flat Campground)
10:00AM start the trail run / have fun till day is done
Pack some food and we'll stop someplace along the trail to eat "lunch".
At the end of the day, we'll make our way back to Silver Fork Rd., then to HWY50 to head home.
The longer story .....
I finally got some answers from TNF and EDNF rangers on conditions of a couple of the options I was thinking about. A lot of roads/trails are still closed due to snow, snow drifts and mud conditions.
BUT, I think I've found an option that is doable, so Im going with it... Long Canyon 4WD Trail (and if there is time, North Shanty 4WD Trail which is close by). I spoke to a ranger at the Placerville Ranger District this AM; she checked the 2018 MVUM and some other file and said the trail is open, pending on-the-ground water / mud conditions (which is a typical FS response).
I havent run this trail yet, so I dont have first hand info on it. The source I found it on rates it as "moderate" ... which they define as follows:
"While more challenging than the "Easy" rated trails, drivers of all skill levels can enjoy these trails. At this level a stock high clearance four wheel drive vehicle is required. Trails are typically narrow with possible brush that may scratch your vehicle. Passing usually requires backing up."
However... I believe there info may be a little dated so the actual trail conditions could be anything... so standard disclaimer alert... Use your own judgment and participate at your own risk - I take no responsibility for you/your guests/your vehicle/etc.
