Nor Cal Wheeling, Camping and BS - 2018

Strawberry Canyon trail run Sat. Nov. 24th 2018

OK... so here are the details for the trail run Sat. Nov. 24th ...
(Yeah, I know its Thanksgiving weekend... but for anyone around that wants to meet up and enjoy the day...)

The plan is to run Strawberry Canyon 4WD Trail (17e73), from the South (from HWY88/ Caples Lake) to the North (to HWY50). NFS says its open and I know some on here have recently run it. I'll be planning to take it nice and slow and enjoy the day. Nothing crazy.


7:15 AM First meet up at Starbucks in El Dorado Hills (address: 4311 Town Center Blvd #450, El Dorado Hills, CA 95762)

7:30 AM to ~ 9:45 AM Caravan to pre-trail run rally point. Rally point will be the Caples Lake Maintenance station on Schneider Cow Camp Rd (38.707831, -120.039152). (Note, I will likely stop to top off my gas tank at Kirkwood, so I built a little time in for that.) We will air down and what not here before hitting the dirt.

Around 10:00 AM We will leave the maintenance station to run the trail.

Trail is something like 10-13 miles long depending on where you start counting from ... and from what I've read takes 3 ish hours depending on stops and what not ... So, we should be off the trail / back to HWY 50 early-ish afternoon (2pm? 3pm?)

Bring your CB / FRS, own food / water / snacks, recovery gear, etc. Be prepared for fall / winter weather. Ill be bringing my recovery gear ... but the more diversity & backup the better.

This past weekend I hit Deer Valley Trail. I was told just the entry (gate keeper) was the hardest part. I felt like it didn’t get that much easier. We started the run at 11 am and didn’t finish till 9. Maybe having 10 rigs might have played a role in getting out late. Well three rigs turned around about a mile in because sun was going down. I decide to proceed forward because again I was told it gets easier.
Lesson learned. I know I’m not doing that run again. At least I represented. I was the only Toyota on 33’s and the rest were Jeeps. They were pretty impressed I was able to keep up with them.

Last year, [MENTION=88231]having fun[/MENTION], [MENTION=106195]v_man[/MENTION] and I ran Deer Valley and the gate keeper was one of the easier obstacles. That trail was just non-stop "fun". We did the trail in 3-4 hours after having run Slick Rock.

A very good trail, as long as you have some armor. 10 rigs is a lot for a trail run if you want to make any time.

Oh snap I was referring to my own set haha. Means there are now 3 total sets of traction mats (or bridging ladders depending on which hemisphere you prefer).

I don't have a CB so is there any suggestions for a back up plan? Or should I just borrow some of cheapo handhelds from work and try and stay in the loop that way?

I have FRS too .... if you've got one of those we can use that. Not sure if anyone else has comms so might just be horns n hand signals :lmao:
 
I have a handheld CB I keep in the truck for coms. Does not get the best range, but it works well when you are in a group.

For anyone who does not have coms for there rig, 70 bucks off amazon and it is set up so you can hook it up to an external antenna if you want to wire one up.

Yeah, I have the amzn hand held cb special too... with the mag mount roof antenna... not greatest range... but works for well for wheeling in groups.

Thanks. I've had a CB on my to do list for awhile. Hard wired would rock but it's a pain. This may be the best option. Although it will likely have to wait until after Christmas. Let me see if I can get certain people on board... Just not going to ask her on her birthday. Especially not her 30th birthday.

I'm pretty excited about this trip. Gonna be a lot of fun to get out there and break up the monotony
 
Cb seems to be a sure thing. From the little I’ve researched frs/gmrs sounds better. Any reason that’s not the “go to” as opposed to cb. Complicated? It’s sounds a little tricky if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I have a CB, lol that puts me in the back again :) Need to invest into more air filters, or maybe I'll get lucky and we get some rain, or at least heavy fog to keep the dust down.
