Nor Cal Wheeling, Camping and BS - 2018

Cb seems to be a sure thing. From the little I’ve researched frs/gmrs sounds better. Any reason that’s not the “go to” as opposed to cb. Complicated? It’s sounds a little tricky if you don’t know what you’re doing.

My guess is that back in the day, frs was Garbage compared to cb, so 4x4ers used cb and stuck with it carrying on.

Now gmrs and ham is the way to go for obvious reasons, but CB is a radio system you just can't go wrong with cause everyone on the trails uses it, even if it means frs has gotten leagues better than it.

As for setting up cb, I too thought it'd be a PITA, but once you get to actually installing and tuning it, it's pretty damn easy.

Edit.

Also cb is just easy to get started with. No licensing/training required like gmrs or ham.

I have a CB, lol that puts me in the back again :) Need to invest into more air filters, or maybe I'll get lucky and we get some rain, or at least heavy fog to keep the dust down.

Gotta install some sprinklers on the back of Folsom4Rnr s truck. I'll pitch into that cause I'm usually the tail end of the pack. LOL

... yeah ... no licensure / FCC BS is why I opted for the CB over the HAM. I had the FRS from before... used to come in handy snowboarding .. well, at least before you could get cell reception all over the mountains it was...

Well, I think we're supposed to have something like a 40-50% chance of precip next week... so maybe it wont be soooo bad...

Had the afternoon off so I decided to get a jump on preparation for next weekend. All fluids under hood: check. All fluids under chassis: check. Grease all ball joints/tie rods/u joints: check. Get supplies arranged: check. Torque and air tires tmrw at work and I'm ready to rock. Reminder to those who forget or don't have time: always a good idea to give your rig a once-over before a trip. A week ahead gives you time to fix things if something is found askew.

In the military we call this PMCS. We weekly, monthly, quarterly checks that are be done. Extremely useful, I've caught a few things before we ended up rolling because of it. On that note, since I'm replacing my axle this weekend, I will be doing some good ol' maintenance.

Logging Trucks

The logging trucks in my area use CB to announce their location. You'll find signs at the bottom of hills used by trucks with a number on it, announcing the channel. I've had some close calls, and know someone who totaled their new pickup on the front of a logging truck. A CB is better than nothing.

Just saw this today
How accurate is it ??
That site is not updated. That trail opened this summer and was officially announced on the El Dorado NFS Facebook. A few of us ran it this summer and confirmed with the rangers that it is indeed open.

My driver's side front diff is leaking. Does anyone know of any good shops in the walnut creek area? Or even better, does anyone have any seal presses and can help me do it myself?

It also depends on how bad its leaking. Generally speaking, diffs aren't under pressure like a cooling system for example so if you can't get it fixed before the trip you'd probably be ok as long as you top off the diff. It's a gamble, but so is attempting a repair at the 11th hour. If you can refill a system quicker than it leaks out, A leak isn't the end of the world.

That being said, a block of wood works well for tapping a seal into place.

That is what i was thinking. It does not seem to be dumping gear oil out. I've already threw some more in and I have one more crush washer so i can pull the plug and top it off. I'm going to try and get it done before if i can find a seal. If not I'll top it off and get it fixed when we get back.

I was thinking about heavier gear oil. Maybe that will slow it down enough as a stop gap?
