It's worth the skids for those stock rock anchors

Yeah, I remember doing the same yrs ago. Had to bend things back, then decided to reinforce and add my own skid to that area. Then did the reinforce trailing arms I gave you.
Never had a problem since. At least not on that spot.

Yeah Kirkwood is saying they got 12" ....but that's it's raining now so :shrug: regardless, I think it'll be fun!

While we're on the subject, all you long distance travelers be sure to leave early and don't hold up the show! Thanksgiving weekend could be a disaster on the road. Maybe not Saturday but who knows.

And let's be careful and slow on the trail agreed? Let's learn from others' ummm how shall we say difficulties? ^^^

Looks like there are some but im not sure if it will effect us. I did not look too closely.

Id expect chain control near Kirkwood... but The ski resort said 12” and they notoriously over report.... so even if they’re close I'd still hope our route is open.

As a back up, we can try Baltic Ridge Trail (it’s off HWY88 and wouldn’t be too much of a back track). Or Long Canyon (it’s also in the vacinity). Both are lower elevation than Strawberry.

I’m headed up to try regardless. See ya all at 715am at Starbucks.

I did have a dumb question: does chain control also apply to 4wd? I was always under the impression it's chains OR 4wd but I never knew for sure.

I’ll give him a holler if I’m running behind at all

Also for those that have run the trail
How is it for a stock 4Runner with a locker
And are skids 100% needed
Cause I took mine off last weekend and haven’t put them back on.

There's 3 different levels of chain control. Usually by the time we hit level 3, they usually shut down the roads... Cause California...

Requirement 1 (R-1): Chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires1 on at least two drive wheels. Chains must be carried by vehicles using snow tires. All vehicles towing trailers must have chains on one drive axle. Trailers with brakes must have chains on at least one axle.
Requirement 2 (R2): Chains or traction devices2 are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels.
NOTE: (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas.)
Requirement 3 (R3): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, no exceptions.

Yea definitely... I genuinely wish I had more armor before even attempting Fordyce. LOL

That's actually smart. Just get some flat pieces of metal and reinforce it, since I think it's kinda a rip off for what they charge for those things. LOL

I need to get to installing those trailing arms. Combination of being lazy, and not having enough time sucks. :rofl:

In California, no matter what, you are required to carry chains, even in a 4WD vehicle. I have actually been turned around by CHP in my old 80 because I had no chains and remaining tread was questionable in his opinion.

Damn. Well I'm not buying chains for this trip so if I get turned around, so be it. I'd try again in the spring I guess ha. I'm still gonna roll with the pack and see how it all unfolds. I feel confident we'll be fine and figure something out.

There are two rocky obstacles, I needed to use sliders to get passed them.

In case anyone who didn't attend was curious: Strawberry was a no-go. Had 2' of fresh snow heading up and we got turned around. We then went back down to Emigrant Trail which also had a bunch.

[MENTION=166093]RDOOGZ89[/MENTION] and I opted out after seeing [MENTION=142877]Folsom4Rnr[/MENTION] get hung up twice in the first mile and half and learning that path was going to be about 25 miles more of that. Took me 45 minutes, 6 or more grown men and 2 shovels just to turn around in that icy powder.

That was at 11:30 am. I didn't get back home until 4:15. As of 5:50 pm I still haven't heard from him or the rest of them. Hoping they make it down alright. I'm keeping and ear out so post up gents when you get back down
