Normal coolant temps

we never said we didnt believe in the jiggle valve... :)

Dude, that comment wasn't aimed at anyone. Just a simple statement that somebody learned firsthand that the jiggle valve can make a pretty big difference in the coolant temps. Seeing is believing.

Are you gonna try to figure out why you're running hotter than a lot of us or just accept your coolant temps as normal? If you put a little bit of time into it, I bet you'll figure it out. If you want to accept temps in the 200's as normal, that's your prerogative. I think you should figure it out and stop trying to talk yourself into believing your coolant temps are normal. After I switched back to my old thermostat, I'm now running between 188-192 just like Herculean T4R

It's obvious it bothers you so figure it and join the high 180's to low 190's club.

No, im happy. It's actually @193-196.

Could be my thermostat, I never replaced it since owning the vehicle. But, everything is a o k.

Great thread! And I'm going to keep it going with my unique situation. Here's the details
1999 3.4 Auto 4x4. External tranny cooler, by passed stock one. 239,000miles
Before timing belt job (previous timing belt done by Right Toyota in 2012)
-Scangauge installed Jan 2017
-temps regularly 198-207
-Peak was 213 on a 95 degree day going 8 miles up 6% at 65mph
-overheated one time at 222 degrees when the radiator cap failed

After Timing belt (replaced last week)
-Replaced by local shop. Shop did timing belt, pulleys, water pump, tstat, fan bearing unit
-it's summer now so higher temps BUT
-now she ranges 193-220
-ALWAYS gets hottest at highway speeds then cools off when I get into town
-Yestersay I replaced the tstat, they had a super cheap MotorRad one in there. I installed a Toyota tstat with jiggle valve at 6
-now around town it's 188-198
-BUT all day today driving in Phoenix at 115 out at highway she ran 220 the whole time! Got as high as 224. Dash gauge didn't move. When I would go into town it would drop to 207. Once I got home up in N. Arizona the temps stayed at 188-193.

What would cause the temps to rise at higher speeds!?

I bought a new fan clutch but I stripped one of the nuts so not sure how to move forward. Read on this thread maybe it wasn't keeping up at highway speeds?
My worry is since the shop installed a cheap tstat they probably did the same with the water pump. I brought up my concern and they keep saying 220 is still within safe range. But per the usual reading normal people getting 190 all day has me freaked out about long term damage.

Do you get the loud fan for the first 20-30 seconds after starting the truck? Do you ever hear the fan go 'loud' when driving and the temps are up?

With a working cooling system, you probably shouldn't be seeing much over 190*F most of the time (say, 186-194*F), and in the craziest of Arizona heat it should probably still stay under about 210*F (AC cranked, 115*F weather, etc.). 220*F temp won't ruin your motor right away, but it isn't something you want all the time...

What parts did they use? Sounds like either the pump isn't any good, the new one, or there are massive amounts of air pockets in the cooling system.

We have another believer that the jiggle valve position definitely makes a difference in the coolant temps. Glad the video helped you out.

Same here. Replaced my thermostat with oem 180 at the correct position. Same weather conditions and I went from 206 engine temp to 186 according to the scan gauge.

This was exactly my experience, went from 207 to 188 just by re-doing the jiggle valve from 12pm to 6pm. This was a year ago, now I'm running at 191F consistently, still see 188 occasionally. Never over 193F.

I do hear the roar of the fan at start up and while driving around. For some reason at speed it creeps up. Today it topped at 207 on the highway (6% grade at 65 for 6 miles 90 outside). But once we pulled off the highway to the forest roads it's dropped to 188.

I have a new fan clutch so I'll try that. If that doesn't work then I found Denso radiators for $99 might just order a new one.

Moved my jiggle valve from 12 to 6 yesterday. I was running 206-213 according to my Scanguage in the 12 o'clock position, today I never saw more than 193 with the jiggle in the 6 o'clock position. Can't understand why this works but I've got to think my fan clutch won't work as hard so I'm hoping for a bit better mileage.

According to the bluetooth obd2 scanner my temps stay around 203 with max 210 (haven't had this scanner for too long, the temps might higher).
Looks like with the jiggle valve it can be brought down and it would certainly be for the better.
Is there a tutorial on how to do this?

Pretty easy, you'll loose coolant so have some to replace. 3 bolts and a new gasket. The valve just needs to be rotated about 180 degrees or just place the jiggle part down. Here's a vid showing about where it it located: https://youtu.be/DGh6F-_UgVs :cowboy:

No matter the day or weather, I run 190 pretty consistently. If I sit at a stop light for more than 30 seconds or so on the hottest of days, it'll bump up to 191-192 and return to 190 after driving again.

I finally saw temps above 193 on a long climb (OD off, 60mph, 6-8% grade, 110*F for about 6 miles, loaded with wife/daughter/gear for a week in the mountains). Got up to the low 200's - once the climb was done, it was right back down to 191*F. Trans temp was in the 220-240 range with only the stock cooler. So there, finally found a situation that can get it to rise above 'normal' :smokin:

Just got an UltraGauge a couple days ago (so glad I did) and my temperatures were hovering around 203F with the highest of 207F while stopped with the A/C on. I figured my thermostat was installed with the jiggle-valve at the 12 o'clock position (from following an old youtube video's instructions when I did my timing belt 18 months ago), so this morning I got to my thermostat and flipped the jiggle-valve to the 6 o'clock position. Took it out for a drive, once it got to operating temperature it hovered around 190F. The highest it got was 194F while stopped with A/C on full-blast, a 13F difference.

I'm happy now! I find it crazy how a tiny little jiggle-valve can make that much of a difference in the temperature.
