Hey all,

Short notice but I'm planning a trip to northern Borrego, Ocotillo Wells area, Truckhaven etc for this weekend, April 25th and 26th (2015).

Well definitely the 25th anyway, I'll stay for the 26th if anyone else wants too, otherwise it'll be a day trip.

I already have a couple of people going and the trip will sort of be an introductory exploration of the area with spots to test out and get used to using 4x4 on sand and mud hills and whatnot and seeing some of the sights in the area. Nothing highly technical.

Departure time will be 9am from Escondido on Sat 4-25. (Exact location to follow in another post) Be gassed and breakfasted up. Bring food for lunch as it will probably happen out on the trail. Also extra food (and water, cooking stuff etc) and bedding for spending the night if you want! Can do some night driving too.

Second meeting point will be at the corner of the 79 and S22 north of Santa Ysabel. Departure time there will be at 10am assuming we leave Escondido on time.

If we are still out on Sunday We can discuss other options like Mud Caves, Split Mtn, Superstition etc...

Im in for this trip as long as a very slow stock 1st gen is allowed.
Ill be leaving from temecula, will there be a meeting point closer to
the trail head? (As escondido adds 50 miles for me)

There is a good meeting spot at the corner of the 79 and the S22 for anyone coming from the north. Meeting time there would be 10am.

It was the second day of a LONG driving trip and I didn't really get any photos that day. :( My photos from that trip were all from east of the Salton Sea.

My general plan was to go out through Borrego Springs. Get off at Font's point, air down, go to the point if people haven't been there, then head down into the valley towards the SVRA and to squaw peak. Run around the little dune there, go to the top of the peak, For those with lockers or ATRAK, try a little hill climb at the top, then tool around the hills there for a bit.

From there head north again, through basin wash, maybe go further and see the palm oasis, then take the truck haven trail over too... truck haven.

Check out the "training area" maybe do a easy obstacle or two, run around there a bit, then go on parts of the Tierra Del Sol trail.

Then ??? after that. There is a slot canyon to the north, little hiking maybe. Could camp at Truckhaven or go back t the SVRA or Split Mtn.

Sunday itinerary TBD on the fly if it happens :)

Weeeeellllllll.....

While there is a ton of places you can go in Borrego with a 4x2 without a lot of trouble (And we'll be covering several), the point of this trip was to seek out places specifically to flex some 4x4 suspensions.

I have done tours with friends in 4x2s all over Borrego and I strap them out when getting stuck in sand now and then so that's usually no big deal, but then we we're mostly sight seeing and specifically staying on trails and washes.

That said, you could come along and follow us around mostly, but in places you would have to wait for us to finish playing in an area or go around different ways (I can guide). Might feel a bit left out at times, but if you want to sight see I think you could keep up with us most of the time as we traveled from here to there and see some palm oasis' and do a lot of wash runs for fun and the scenery is great. :)
 
Oh!

Bring your dune flags if you have them.

They are NOT required for our vehicles anywhere we are going, but they do help with safety.

Other places like the imperial dunes does require them on all vehicles so it's nice to have one just in case anyway :)
 
Ok, time for specifics :)

Primary meeting place is the Vons shopping center parking lot on El Norte Pkwy, east of the 15 (Not the one west of the 15)

Departure time: 9am Saturday
Try to get there ready to go by say 8:45 or so. I'll be there at 8:30.

Secondary meeting point if coming from up north is at the corner of S22 and the 79 near Hemet. There is a big open dirt area on the corner there.

We should be there by around 10am.
Again, arrive early there (no later than 9:45) so that you don't miss us.

And finally, if meeting in the morning out in the desert, we will be getting off the road here at the font's point trailhead

Im in for sure.. I was wanting to stay till sunday afternoon or so, my only concern is i dont have a/c and it looks like things will be heating up a bit sunday. But i have free time (first time in about a year) and ive only been out to ocotillo once in a 2wd truck....basically i want to see as much of the park as possible.

Edit: dammed the heat ill stay till sunday
