Had that on my last 4runner and replaced damn near every fuel component trying to fix it. Mine ended up being the charcoal canister which I found a replacement at the junkyard.

Yeah definitely the most feared code haha.

If the gas cap doesn't fix it, I'm going to get a used charcoal canister. That will most likely be the culprit

EVAP UPDATE: New Oem gas cap didn't fix it.

P0440 code popped up, no CEL. Got new gas cap.

Couple weeks later...P0440 and P0446 WITH CEL and VSC Trac lights on.

Codes cleared and hunting for a new (used) charcoal canister.

Anyone experience their gas mileage decreasing when the charcoal canister/evap system isn't working properly?

You may check the charcoal canister for cracks. I know in the older ones like mine they crack and cause codes. Jb weeks did the trick for me.

I am intrigued about your mileage issue though. I've always had terrible mileage and if a new canister can remedy it I'd me all over that.

I need to get under there and check for loose hoses or cracks in the canister itself. Just too lazy and I usually forget haha.

I'd be curious to know if people have experienced worse mileage when those trouble codes have popped up/issues with canister

So ever since I've had the timing belt done a few months ago I noticed my ultra gauge reading 206-210 for the coolant temp. Figured he didn't know that the stupid jiggle valve needed to be at 6 o' clock. Always bothered me that the temps were higher but it wasn't overheating

Figured I'd pop off the tstat housing and see where the valve was at. Sure enough it was at 12 o' clock. Flipped it around, topped coolant off, and it's back down to 190.

Don't you just love those back burner tasks that finally get accomplished making you feel so much better haha

After studying this evap code to see its frequency. It seems to happen about 60-80 miles after I fill up. I really need to get another charcoal canister.

On a side note. Four 33" BFG KO2's fit on the roof rack haha. Delivered them to my brother who's putting 17" TRD pro wheels on his black '02 sport.

First time pulling a trailer with this hog. Had to go pick a load of parts up for my project car before it goes off to its new owner. I definitely need a re-gear. Would love a SC, but a re-gear and cheaper and will help out a lot. 4.88's is what I'm going to go with. Any suggestions on brand?

Impressed with the way the superflex coils/bilsteins handled the trailer/weight. Hardly no sagging. Wasn't a massively heavy load, but still.

The project car, soon to be off to a good friend.

Went to a few pull a parts to try and find a charcoal canister. Only found a couple 4runners, all being pre-01. Found a guy in 3rd gens Facebook page that has one for cheap. Going to get it and hopefully fix this pesky P0446 code, it's popping up a few times in between fill ups.

Finally sourced a charcoal canister. For 40$ shipped, its worth a shot.

Cleaned up the canister itself and scuffed and painted the brackets because I'm a psycho. Going to get it installed this weekend along with a much needed oil change

East coast gear supply and call it a day. Did 4.88 and an arb rear and love it. I should have done a front locker too but lesson learned. Pretty easy install too

5.29 gearing would put you right back to stock gearing/power with "35's"- as far as I understand. Not that 4.88 wouldn't be a decent difference, but I think I'll be going with 5.29.

Swapped over the new used charcoal canister and used my mall crawler winch to pull a brand new GLS63 into the shop so we could set it up on the frame jig.

Unfortunate news...the P0440 and P0446 code popped up only after a few days after he canister install. Boy this is frustrating. I know most people wouldn't worry about it but my OCD kicks in and bothers the hell out of me haha.

Not sure where to go from here. It's either a vsv or the sender in the tank or whatever.

On a side note, car wash weather gave me a chance to give her a solid hand wash
