Not A Good Start For The 335i

I see you only read and comprehend what you want to. Edmunds clearly admits there was a 19 hp (not peak) difference (1/2 lbs boost) and they can't account for it. Why do you continue to say they are the same?

Koz...let's not even talk about Edmunds' test car...Edmunds took a 335i off the streets and dynoed it. Peak rwHP was 272 (again, this is NOT the test car's specs). Is there more to the story?? Let's just look at that and compare it to what IS350 gets at the dyno (258-260rwHP). Add in the more torque in 335i, similar 6-speed auto tranny and you get what a faster car. The only thing that i am missing are the gear ratios on the auto trannies and final drive ratio. And Lexus is usually conservative in it's gear ratios (tuned for fuel economy more than acceleration).

And at 272 rwHP (Steve's car, NOT Edmunds test mule)...BMW is indeed UNDERRATING the HP rating on it's spec sheet...it should be around 330 HP (similar to M3), not 300. This is clear as day, Koz. The only way that BMW 335i would lose to Is350 in a straight line race is if BMW really screwed up on gear ratios, which i doubt given BMW's aggressive nature.

Take a look at the stock hp. Also note he claims the 335i gets 264 to 270 hp stock. I've seen stock ISs getting 258 to 265 hp.

Quote from YOUR link: "...we were very curious as to how it would fair, in stock form, to my non-updated 335i (when it was stock, of course). The results varied between 264-270whp and 283-285lbft. This was 7-10whp and 5-6lbft less than my personal car."

Koz, that is still better than most IS350's numbers...in fact, from searching Clublexus, NO IS350 CAME CLOSE TO 264 rwHP. Most were in the 258-260 rwHP. Then you add in 283 ft-lbs of torque on dyno!!...and you got yourself an M3 killer in fact!

NOTICE...his friend's 335i got 7-10whp and 5-6lbft more than the guy in the link...so, it is POSSIBLE that 335i's performance numbers vary NATURALLY without BMW's "lack of integrity.":p

This just proves that both Edmunds' 335i and Steve's 335i (the one Edmunds pulled off the street) are LEGITIMATE.

These numbers put the 335i numbers about: 325-330 HP and 335 ft lbs at the crank or something in that territory! So, it is unlikely that any stock IS350 can run with stock 335i from a standstill (0-whatever mph). Now, IS350 may be able to beat 335i from a rolling acceleration where turbos show their weakness.

Thanks for the link, Koz...it just strengthened my argument many times.:)

And needless to say about the above link...did you see how easy it was to get a ton more power??!!! "330rwhp and 357lb-ft of torque" Holy shit!! You can really make a 335i into a sleeper!!:)

Koz, just for you...Car & Driver tested a 335i manual: "The 335i rips to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, 0.1 second slower than the current M3

Koz, i read most of it...what is so interesting?? There is no new info to this comparison. Most on there agreed that BMW 335i is faster & handles better than IS and G35.

I agree with some on there...my favorite in that class may just be the '07 G35. But, then i am getting older now, so maybe the Lexus GS350 may be better.

I thought it was interesting that the IS was leading the poll even though there are many more 3 series out there. The G35 has the best all-wheel drive and is the best bang for the buck. What made me go for the IS was the difference in interior styling and quality. None of the other vehicles compare to the Lexus. The G35 also gets poor gas mileage. I will keep this car for many years and plan on many long trips. So Luxury and reliability are the main priorities. The GS350 drives like a boat compared to the IS.

Koz, do you know the sale figures between BMW 3-series and Lexus IS??

The main problem with G35 for me is that to get the nice stuff (rear steering, big brakes), you have to go for Sport model. I have read that Sport model is very hard riding over anything except smooth highway.

I like the GS because of it's very nice interior style. Exterior style is forgettable unfortunately. Yeah, i guess that you're right...GS does not win many awards for it's performance side.:(

My only problem with IS is the small backseat (smaller than my Corolla i think). Otherwise, like you said, it's an excellent car. I would have really love it if Lexus had soften the exterior look a tad...make it more "refined" in it's lines, and less edgy. This is maybe a minority opinion, but i really do like the previous IS shape (without the stupid clear taillights).

The IS was not intended to be a Family sedan, that's why there is the ES. If you take a close look at the ACTUAL dimensions between the IS and the 330i/335i, you will find that Lexus uses the interior space allot more effectively. Here are the actual dimensions of the back seats in the 330i and the IS.

Rear interior volume
330i = 41 cu.ft.
IS = 34 cu.ft.

These are the figures all the rag mags dwell on and what most people read and feel when sitting in the seats.

Here are the (actual) figures that I see and have felt when I sat in the back of each of these vehicles on test rides.

Rear seat head room.
330i = 35.5 in.
IS = 35.5 in.

Rear seat width.
330i = 42 in.
IS = 53 in.

Rear seat knee room.
330i = 23 in.
IS = 23 in.

PS - The IS's interior was very efficiently designed to provide more seating room in the front/back. They also sacrificed some rear volume to provide more volume up front and a slightly bigger trunk.

Yeah, i guess that you're right. I am not a big person...and the IS rear seat is super tight when i sat in it. No room under the front seat for my toes!:( The IS is not a family car, but it is also not a 2-seater either. This is why i am intrigued by the Infiniti G35.

The reason ES is out of the question is that it is FWD. I am not currently in the market, but maybe in the next few years. I like to have some room for practical reasons while still with RWD or AWD platform.

After looking at IS and BMW 3-series, i am shocked at how efficiently packaged my little Corolla is!:) Yeah, i know...people can walk faster than my Corolla.

I'll be letting my extended-cab Taco go, so having an actual back seat will be a nice change. I'm still going to miss the Taco. What a great little truck, especially with the TRD blower.

Koz

I have had a few IS250 loaner cars and I enjoyed every minute of it. I honestly didn't want to give them back to the dealer! I loved every aspect of the car except the back seat. I am over 6' and my head was touching the ceiling when I would sit up straight. The ES350 seemed to have more room in the back, but was not nearly as fun to drive!

Thai, I think the 335i is quite a bit heavier then the m3 so it wouldnt be an m3 killer to an extent. however it is a nice car as I have driven both the 350 and the 335. 335 has more raw power feel to it. 350 just has that smooth sensation like a porsche.

m3 is faster then a 335 without a doubt and usually an m3 can push upwards of about 283 at the wheels.

335i Coupe weigh in at: 3571 lbs (manual)
M3 weigh in at: 3415

Well, according to my numbers above, the 335i is only a few ponies (at most!) behind M3, while having significantly more torque. Like i said above, the M3 will have a slight edge due to it's SMG tranny (0.08 shifting speed), more aggressive gearing (i think), 100% lockable LSD (more power to ground on acceleration), wider tires, stiffer suspension, etc.. However, it will be a very very close race. And the trap speed from recent tests of 335i proves it...it's very close to M3 numbers.

As for M3 pushing 283 rWHP...i don't know...i searched my own M3 forum and found the stock numbers i posted above.
