Not A Good Start For The 335i

Well, here's a new DYNO test by Edmunds on the 335i's engine:

"This led us back to the chassis dynamometer at MD Automotive in Westminster, California, the same facility we used to test an overachieving, automatic-equipped 335i.

As the dyno reveals, our 335i test car produces 280 hp 5,800 rpm as measured at the rear wheels, while the G37 comes up with 281 hp at 7,200 rpm. As close as these numbers look, the 335i holds a huge advantage over the G in power under the curve from idle to 6,350 rpm. And if you look at torque, the difference is even uglier: 279 lb-ft at 3,370 rpm for the BMW versus 229 at 4,500 rpm for the Infiniti.

The thing to keep in mind is that the G37's dyno numbers are actually right on target. They're 15 percent lower than the published specifications (which don't take drivetrain losses into account) and that's what you can expect from most production cars. The 335i's numbers were only 7 percent down from the specs, which suggest to us that BMW has slightly underrated it."

HP & Torque AT REAR WHEELS for 335i engine: about 280 & 280! And this proves that BMW engine is putting out these numbers CONSISTENTLY vehicle after vehicle.

Here is the dyno chart:

I just seen the 335i on Motorweek and it ran 13.7 (coupe) and 13.8 (sedan) Hmm.

Every time the BMW TT V6 is dynoed it is making more power (Hmm). With those numbers it certainly looks like sandbagging.

It all comes down to the condition (weather, elevation) of those tests. It's best when you compare A vs. B under same conditions. It's kinda strange when different magazines are getting similar numbers on the dyno, isn't it??

With a 15% driveline lose (at 280hp) the motor would be making 330hp.

Yup, just like what i wrote a few pages ago (see page 3)...thus, it's performance is on par with M3...just look at the latest 335i coupe 6-speed manual numbers from Edmunds. I do think that the M3's gearing is more aggressive (along with LSD), which still has a slight (disappearing?) advantage.

Remember, there are a few tests where the M3 did horrible 1/4 miles times too. Edmunds was one of them!:(

P.S.: what is surprising is that Lexus vehicles are now no longer bargains in their class...something that certainly attract the bargain-minded consumers.

Just to comment on this statement. I priced the 335i sedan with the same options I got in my IS and the MSRP came to $52,100. My MSRP was just over $45K and I paid $40K. When I test drove the 335 and talked money, BMW would not bargain in good faith. I had trouble trying to get a $1K off retail. The IS may be more then the TL and G but it has better build quality and higher material quality then ALL the cars in its class, including the 335i. So, in my book, it is still the best value/buy in its class. Price them and you should see the same thing. What the rags do is compare un-equal optioned vehicles and make one look more attractive. One of the rags said the Mark Levinson was a $4K option (when it is a little over $1K and worth every penny). The stereo alone is good reason for some to choose the IS.

Well, it's not fair to criticize a company that can dictate it's asking price, right?? There are people out there that feel that the 335i is a bargain esp. when you get M3 performance...you do not. I don't either, but BMW does sell every 335i that it makes so far...it's hard to criticize their business aspect in this sense. It's like buying a Rolex...some say that it's worth it, others don't. Whatever floats your boat i guess. I am sure that BMW and Lexus will sell well.

I am not so sure if the IS350 has a higher quality than the TL or BMW. I was not impress with the IS's interior quality when i saw it...on the other hand, the GS was spectacular IMHO.

I am happy that you're happy with your bargain car.:D Remember, a "best buy" or "best value" is usually not "class- leading" nor "M3-beater".:) (BTW, it was pretty funny when you implied that the M3 is getting a V8 because M-division was scared of the IS!):D

I have my IS in for its 5K free oil change and they gave me a 250 loaner without the luxury pkg, nav and ML and there is a big difference. Also I have the all black interior (with the bird's-eye maple wood, make for Lexus by Yamaha) which also makes a big difference. It actually feels like a different car.

I definitely think that the IS looks better with wood! Good choice.

Hay Thai,

Have a nice weekend!

PS I'll be in Norman OK the 16 to the 20, to bad we couldn't hook-up.

The fact is, the IS did increase sales by over 300% and sold more cars then even Lexus projected.

Sales figures of BMW 335i (sedan) + 328i (sedan) + 328xi + 335xi for June 2007: (source: http://www.autospectator.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=10371)

1333 + 4234 + 308 + 569 = 6444

Without 335xi (since Lexus does not have IS350 AWD): 5875

From Toyota pressroom:
"Combined sales of the IS 250 and IS 350 posted best-ever June sales of 5,182 units."

As you can see, i did NOT include the other versions of the BMW 3-series so that you can compare the stats directly with each other. But, it must be pointed out that if BMW did not have the other versions, then the sales figures above probably would have been higher. Both IS and 3-series are good sellers, but BMW does have an edge.

Fair & balance...this is how you present data in a fair way.

I could care less about how any one vehicle sells. I only posted the sales data to show that the initial problems with the Tundra and Tacoma had very little effect on its sales and that it will take a big bite out of the pick-up market, which was untouchable. Also how Toyota, with all the Doom and Gloom you brought to our attention, meant nothing and is on its way to becoming the number one manufacture in the world and in the US. It
