Not a “max spare tire size” question

I’d rather ask, what is the most appropriate or acceptable sized spare to have in conjunction with 285/75/16 BFG KO2s.

I wouldn’t care if it was a bald 225/75/16, highway tire as long as it worked as was the same diameter.

Any recommendations?

What, for your spare? My vote goes for same size if it will fit.

use same size diameter if possible, width does not matter, if not then only use spare when NOT in 4wd and only to get you to a repair.

The obvious answer is another 285/75/R16 BFG KO2. If you are looking for an alternative tire which will keep the same diameter but be narrower, I'd recommend using something like this to see how tire sizes compare. Remember that anything you go with that keeps the same diameter as your non spare tires will run into the same packaging problems if you are trying to put it on the stock spare tire carrier.

Try to find a used 255/75R16 tire by searching CL in your area. It is nearly the same diameter (+0.9% difference). A fair number of trailers run that size.

You're meaning 255/85r16, I'll bet.

Just spit-balling ideas here, but what about that same size, aired down (possibly flat), and keeping an air pump on board? Would it fit in the spare space if flat? Is this otherwise an awful idea?

This is what I do. But still says low under the bumper. It will definately catch obstacles offroading and leaves me wanting a rear tire swing out to avoid the hassle of dragging it on obstacles. So it's not an ideal solution if you plan to wheel. If you don't wheel this will work fine for you.
