Lately I've seen some treads about the ABS systems on our 4runners, though I've only had my runner for almost a year I have had it through 2 Utah winters and have had no problems. It wasn't until yesterday when I was pulling off the side of the road and hit some really heavy mud the ABS really screwed me over. Now I know my tires aren't the best but I was only going about 5-7 mphs and when I hit the breaks all that happened was the ABS pulsing and NO stopping. I slid for about 4-5 feet until the ditch stopped me. And the pictures tell the rest, at least it was a Tundra that pulled me out. Never the less I will not be disabling my ABS for now, but will be more careful, hopefully this decision doesn't come back to bite me.

This is my first winter with this 4runner and I left the house on icey roads up here 2 weeks ago and I'll tell you I wasn't impressed with the ABS. I'm 54 and been up here in NH all my life so I think I can drive but I may be putting a toggle switch as someone else here said they did. Light braking and they would pulse and the truck would just slid. My tires are good. NOT junk ones either. Mich. Lattitude X-Ice.
I'm really glad I read about this problem on here. Otherwise I would not have expected this.

Elton this color has def grown on me and it makes me happy to not see to many of them on the road, like I said before one day mine will be as bad ass as yours.

No I haven't done the "grey" wire mod, maybe you could clear up some things for me? When done you can use the locker in all situations just as long as the speed is lower than 5 mph, any faster and it unlocks itself? If it unlocks it self at speeds faster than 5 mph and no damage would be done will the abs still stay off? So can I just use the button to turn off the abs and the locker will still engage and disengage on its own and not have to worry about something breaking?
I too think the similarities of our vehicles is funny, who every purchased mine also got the 5speed, alarm, 3 disc cd changer, rear air, ect, but the one thing I wished it had was the sun roof, which I think you have:gun6:

I have done the grey wire mod and have ran with it locked at speed. I have experienced no problems and have not experienced it unlocking over 5mphs like you stated. Once the splines line up it engages and stays. The abs does not work afterwords in my experience.

Lockers do not automatically lock or unlock unless you push the RR Diff switch and put your transfer case to 4Lo.

Same goes whether you performed the Blue/Red wire mod or the Grey wire mod if you actually found a grey wire.

I was under the impression that Toyota had a safety feature built in when speeds got to high the rear end would unlock.

Out of curiosity, I locked my rear axle the other day, then shifted into 4Hi, and the diff lock light on the dash started blinking at me. Is that normal? I have not yet done the grey wire mod.

diff lock only works in 4low with this mod it will bypass all that but keep the 10mph safety where it will not lock over that but to be safe id just lock it when stopped

So then it did automatically unlock when I shifted from 4Lo to 4Hi? It felt like it did, but it was really snowy, so it was hard to tell.

I need to do this mod and add an ABS switch now that winter is here.

yes should of unlocked also i wouldint use just the locker in the snow

If your talking snow wheeling where your wanting all 4wheels digging into the pow pow searching for traction then sure get locked up. But if your just wanting to stay out of the bankers club and go straight down a icy/snow packed hwy then leave the locker off and stick with the limited slip.

Blue wire mod is a must! Best and most rewarding 5min mod ever! I normally ride all the local trails with just the rear locked until I get stopped in a big mud hole or require a front tire for traction in some off-camber climbs. You will need to drop below 5mph for it to lock but I've had it to 70 w/o unlocking (forgetfull me left it locked once). I hate ABS, it was created for old women that can't feather a pedal. I'll never wheel with it on, there were a few spots that almost caused me to roll when the ABS just let the truck go down the hill back when I first got it and them came the blue wire mod.
