Hey there. This is my second topic on here. I have a 1988 4 runner with the 3 liter engine. Well I have spent a fortune on this machine. It had a spark issue that has been narrowed down to ecus. I have bought 5 ecus in the last 2 years trying to get this on the road. I have an extra I hope. Anyways if you reconnize this truck you might remember me. So what could be fryng my ecus? I have not driven this truck at all. It was at a crappy mechanics place stealing my money. So I have no idea what could be wrong. It does run now. Has very old gas in it right now. But it runs. And is now 1 hour and 15 minuets closer in my driveway.

Also is there any advice on here about repairing the removable tops? My slideing window area is really bad. Ill post pictures tomorrow.

I don't want to step on toes here but I think the folks at yotatech do a lot more hands on mechanical work on 1st gen 4Runners. You might also ask there. You really need to post pictures of the sliding window problem. If you posted on both forums more often you could place an ad for the parts you need. My first inclination is that you probably have a fried wire somewhere in your harness. The wires are wrapped together so it's hard to find the shredded one. You'll probably need to learn to sort the problem yourself because at $49/hour or more it would be very expensive to pay somebody to find it.

Did you or the previous owner do a lot of wiring changes? Start with aftermarket lights, stereo and alarm. The wiring short might be obvious. Worst case is you might need to buy a whole new harness. Get it from the same year, transmission and motor as yours. Same with the ECU's you buy.

SO I got my window working. Well I got it the rest of the way up. But I had to pull it up and down with help from the motor. I had to jump it with a battery.
You can see by the removable top it has some damage around the windows.

I'm not sure what the problem is with the windows. If they're just brutal to slide try a spray can of silicone. The rusty "L" trim might be causing problems. Terry87 on yotatech just showed a few days ago how to take that trim off to paint. You have to remove it from the inside and take the sliding window out. I think they did not paint the inside of the "L" trim because it rusts on most 1st gens. I've painted mine. A guy in Canada makes new fiberglass ones but they are $$$.

I got the WD40 type and freed up the sliding windows quite a bit.

I've still got one window that doesn't want to click shut. :|

So my 4 runner is a sr5 model. I guess its a body package. Anything else that comes with this package? Im not worried about the window anymore. its up now and winter will soon be here. Only time I think I would put it down is to put My Tecate 3 wheeler in the back. Yeah Im one of those crazies. 2 Stroke raceing 3 wheeler. How crazire can you get. I also have a problem finding the little cables for my emergency brake. I have a set off an older modle that I dont think I can make work."But my red neck mind says yes" Does anyone know of a common spot on the wireing harness thats prone to chafeing or breaking? Also a nice 2-4 inch body lift would look sweet.

SR5's came with the full gauge with tachometer, nicer cloth seats, carpet, a higher console with pad, chrome package on the outside, inclinometer, anything I'm forgetting? I think you could have an SR5 with manual windows but most have power windows. ALL had the power back window. Both my 1st gens have been DLX's, the basic model. I have vinyl seats, vinyl floor, roll up windows, vent windows, a standard gauge (easily changed). The white 4Runner shown below is a very stripped down DLX but the original owner sprung for a "chrome package." My original '88 had graphite bumpers and front grill. I paid $12,500 for a new '88 with A/C as the only option. Fully loaded runners were $22k at the time.

Actually I removed the original doors with power windows. Trying to get a mvi for it. SO now people are telling me that it might be my wireing harness. anyone have a good way to check this or areas to check first?
