Obama: US has always paid it's bills

Think of it this way, you go to work and come home to find there was a sewage back up in your neighborhood. Your home now has sewage all the way up to your ceilings. Do you raise the ceilings or remove the shit?

The military has stock piles of tanks and planes that have never and possibly will never be used. Meanwhile people complain about providing healthcare to the sick.

Without an army (or credible threat of force), there won't be a need to care for the sick, right?

There is a difference between debt and deficit.

Second, one of the biggest economic problems going forward is rising healthcare costs. By the CBO's own report Obamacare is expected to save money long term and even in the short term there is already a decline in the rate of cost inflation.

Third anyone who thinks that the EPA is the problem with the budget needs to learn their facts. Those organizations represent a tiny sliver of the budget when compared to the big 3 of military, social security and healthcare. The military budget is absolutely insane. It has gotten to the point where the government is actually forcing millions of dollars onto the military for things that it doens't even want.

Army says no to more tanks, but Congress insists | Fox News

Also, I hope at least someone can see the irony of this political madness over the budget causing a government shutdown which is actually costing the government EVEN MORE money.

At least with a defense procurement you actually get a product for your money and you create tens of thousands of private sector jobs.

Just want to make sure that this isn't as sick a statement as it sounds. Are you actually saying that giant hunks of metal that will quite possibly sit in a hangar somewhere their entire life and never even be used are more important than healing the sick?

Absolutely, completely, totally correct. Sad that more Americans don't recognize this.

No way that black moslum hussein president of yours is paying squat, yeeeehaw!! White republicans are the only way to pull this county out of socialism and food stamps. Mercia!!! Guns!!

I hardly think that the costs of the wars were necessary. How much money did the government give civilians to do the same thing that soldiers should have been doing? How much money went into pointless junk during the wars that wasn't needed?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I don't blame our debt on the war. The responsibility to spend wisely has always been in the hands of our government and they have been failing for years!

I don't think the past 10 years and paying for wars is the entire reason for our debt and economic troubles. Heck, the portion for which they're responsible may even be miniscule.

That said, I do think that the wars and the recession are the primary reason why it's become as much of an important issue as it is. I can't remember the last time we weren't in debt or our deficit wasn't ridiculously-high. But I also don't recall it ever being this much of an issue (or causing this much finger-pointing in Washington).

The bigger problem is the gluttonous and useless fed organizations like the Dept of Education, EPA, Dept of Commerce, etc.

Yeah, because who needs education, clean air and water, or regulating of a commercial fishing industry that would rape our ocean resources if left unchecked?

There is certainly waste in the federal government, just as there is in state and local government or in any private company. But you obviously don't have a lot of information on what these agencies do on a day-to-day basis.

On the topic of military spending...

I'm all for a strong military, but there's no reason on earth that my local Coast Guard unit needs to have more money, weapons, and boats than the Honduran Navy, yet less than 2 dozen people in the unit to use the stuff.... or why a local military reserve unit should be buying lift tickets at the local ski resort - all while I can't get tires for my government vehicle.

To me, the biggest problem with government spending is not what agencies buy during the course of a fiscal year. It's what they buy at the end of the year; the "use it or lose it" period in September, when managers are told on September 15th that they need to spend X in the next two weeks or they won't get the same amount budgeted for next year.

That mentality needs to go. At the same time, we can get rid of the concept among the powers-that-be, which dictates that if the Department of Labor was thrifty, managed their budget, and was able to save the government 2 million dollars last year, we're going to reduce their funding by that much next year.

When the culture of the government is to penalize an agency or department for trying to save money, that's a big problem.

I used to think people who said the US was heading towards communism were stupid extremists. Now that we are more or less forced to buy health insurance, I'm not so sure...

I'm one of those that have been saying that very thing. Don't even care if you were a sheep before. It is more important that everyone wakes up NOW!!

No fairy tails here folks.....it's in your face now, and if we don't put these idiots in their place then it will get worse.

You think Obamacare is the only thing being stuffed down your throat?????

WAKE UP!!!!

LOFL @ equating healthcare and communism

It's called personal responsibility. One of the biggest problems is uninsured "freeloaders" being admitted to ER's for emergency care on everyone else's dime because they don't have insurance. This cost was being passed along to everyone else who does pay.

Hey genious - in communist countries the people don't BUY health care. That's why its called Communism.

Seriously the dumbest thing I have read in this thread so far. Yaaa buddy we do not need educated workers in our society. America would be much better off if there was no public education. :redbrick:

If you've actually talked with a former Communist citizen (as I have on many occasions) you would know more about Communism and also know what he is implying. Sure, you don't get a line item bill for healthcare. What you do get is 1/2 your pay given to the government and your only option for healthcare is the bargain basement government provided crap. Months and months just to get in for a check up, and it's a joke if you actually have to get in for a procedure (FYI, the US is headed right for this scenario).

And yeah, department of education has been doing a bang up job.......let's just keep funding them. You thinking that the bureaucratic nightmare in Washington should run anything in our day to day lives is cause for great concern. It's ok to think for yourself, you don't HAVE to drink Obamas Kool Aid you know......

Wow, where do I start except to say education apparently hasn't worked well for you. The point here is not to get "rid of public education"; it's that we don't need a massive DoE in Washington DC. The dept of Education in DC is basically a huge expensive building full of administrative people and a big money sink. All the states can manage education without washingtons interference. Same thing with commerce. I heard a commentator say "why do we have a dept of commerce? Commerce just happens".
This refers to one of the biggest problems with our current leadership; he's doing everything he can to pull power away from the states and into Washington.... And not just Washington; he wants all the power in the White House.

Just want to add my .02, I feel that America has had it's down fall and rise, that's what happens its like a wave length up and down up and down. From what I've read from the texts is that we've always been able to pull through. Look at all the politicians we've had in and out of the White House. They all have had their influences wether it be good or bad. America has always been able to recover from it. This is just one of those low points in the trough. We will make it through this. It isn't the first time the people have had to live with the government shutdown. In the end it doesn't matter what a bunch of kid in congress think, We The People have the final say. We just have to get up and stand for what it is we want, voting, voicing opinions and having the all around ability to be apart of great forums like this one is a few. Just remember the president is one person, yes it may seem he makes the rules, but we all are the final say. It's the Constitution, what America is and always will be. You just have to make a stand, I took a vow to defend this contry from both forgin and DOMESTIC threats alike. Just remember when it gets tough, there's always something to look forward to. Don't let what one person makes seem crazy actually crazy. Just my.02.

This discussion is covering such a wide array of topics now I've been avoiding it lately... but maybe I'll get bored in the airport next week. I'll just add this - the Federal government is rarely the most efficient and direct form of management for ANY program that relates to the daily lives of its citizens. Further, when you start taking away choices and freedoms in the name of "helping" them and in exchange for additional taxation, which we the people already cannot afford, that is government intrusion at it's finest. Finally, when you keep asking for more money and more capacity to borrow, that is a clear indicator that you are living beyond your means. Yeah, you may get by for a little while but eventually you are going to have to dig yourself out of that hole. Anyone that has been paying attention has witnessed this first hand in the past decade. This isn't only at the Federal level either. It's getting old.

Great points from dirtyfingers and bofa. I was about to say; pick any topic or service... If you want it to be run in the most inefficient and expensive way, hand it to the federal government. And I agree we go in cycles and this is a very low point, but my fear is this prez and the Senate leadership are doing such great damage in the past 5 years, it might be hard to un-do some of the damage they've done.
-highest debt & deficit in the nations history
-by far the highest number of citizens on food stamps
-a true unemployment rate hovering around 10% since 2008, much higher for young people
-IRS used to target specific groups
- a state department that doesn't seem to care about our ambassadors
- a leadership where the buck stops nowhere

We better do some serious praying...
