Weekend EDIT
After not too much math and a sick opportunity, I ordered a 7.5.reverse clamshell front diff with 4.88 gears and spartan locker from ECGS and scored a complete e-locker rear end, drum to drum, with 4.88s installed, an extra actuator, a bearing kit and gear set (also 4.88) for a great deal. Only about 17-18K miles.on the gears and axle bearings.

Weekend Update 249,468

Installed manual hubs/spindles and Taco CVs aka Stage 1 on Saturday and drove it around. You can actually notice a difference between hubs locked and unlocked.

Updated to black lugnuts, too
https://a.co/d/fCtjFGb

Today I adjusted camber via the UCA and prepped a pair of center caps with a 3-1/2" hole saw and some sand paper.

They will get a coat of primer and then painted to match the rims.

Regarding fit, and there's at least 1/2" of clearance between the spindle gusset and the rim/tire. Maybe I'll clearance the gussets a bit more, not sure yet

While I had the skid plate off I swapped out the stock drain and fill plugs on the front diff for Lexus plugs and refilled with Lucas 75w 90

Next steps:
Taco brake lines to eliminate the caliper hardline

New pads and rotors

Install winch (finally)

New-to-me front coilovers

I'm calling this Stage 1 because I'm making changes in phases to ensure issues can be easily isolated if any occur.

I dig it. Those look great. Also, nice St Maxx’s— excellent tire!

Now that you’re a manual hubster it’s the perfect setup for a front truetrac if you like that setup, unless you’re gonna go with ARBs

No ARB, was thinking about a Spartan locker.

EDIT: edited my gear post above

Weekend update 249,960

Getting really close to a milestone: engine oil change, front brake refresh and regear

Busy work week so all I did was finish and install my front center caps after washing it (after running Lytle Creek)

c9f1e1f37923007ce01b57c86edb8d04.jpg

I replaced the locking cap bolts with some black oxide hex flange M6-1.25 x 16 bolts that I finish cured to keep them from rusting

250k. Good deal.. I have 2 over that milestone. One at 252 and another at 284k. I am hoping I hit 300k in my one.

I do like the hubcap mod for your manual hubs. :)

Weekend update 250,025 (missed it the 000 roll)

Put SS braided first gen taco front brake lines on, they are a smidge long...

a97b61abd9fd1d4b2d16830750d3c4ea.jpg

Mounted the hose boss to the spindle along with the ABS hanger that I trimmed to remove the brake hardline bracket.

277c3b410f7422678c95af36d1114807.jpg

Routed the hose behind the endlinks. I'm going to sleeve the brake line with a section of slit PVC hose to give it extra abrasion protection.

Torqued the banjo bolts to 22 # feet per 1st gen Tacoma spec.

Next steps
New drilled and slotted rotors and pads standing by. Just need time to install and properly bed them.

Project progress
Removed the passenger side extension from a donor 7.5 clamshell diff, ended up hammering it out through the diff with a small, angled prybar hammering through the carrier around the cross shaft. Thanks open diff!

4.88 rear 3rd member ready to install. Waiting for front diff to arrive from ECGS via FedEx on Monday.

ITREs need to be done before next outting...

EDIT: updated pics

Wheeler’s Off-Road lines, eh? Love ‘em. I’ve got them too! Very nice touch indeed.

Congrats on the 250K milestone as well.

Thanks, I wish the lines were 2-3" shorter, actually. Might grab a set of Stoptech lines off Amazon to compare

Picked up a used 4XI rear bumper with swing out tire carrier (to passenger), single jerry can holder, hi lift jack holder and license plate mount

I'm in the process of cleaning up the bumper before installing. It was powder coated but looks rust infiltrated and much of the coating flakes off, I'm wire wheeling and sanding and will hit the bare/rust spots with primer and rust converter before rattle canning it to match my front bumper.

I also ordered a few replacement parts from 4XI and will use this opp to re-route my exhaust to make room for a future rear aux tank. At that point I'll use the jerry can holder for water.

Will ultimately move my awning over to the driver side to accommodate a passenger-sided tire swing out.

My favorite bumper :)

Change our your rear cabin vent while the bumper is off and put some poly Sonoran steel body mounts back there if you haven't already.

4x also sells filler plates now for the gap left between the body and bumper. I haven't gotten around to installing mine yet. I'm waiting for cooler weather...

Thanks, acquiring this bumper was basically luck

I've got 62940-35010 pending install and poly body mounts/1" lift blocks on the truck already.

I looked at the filler plate, I'll see what I can fab up before dropping $70 on a piece of flat metal. I would rather put those funds towards a full size spare and jerry can.

Regarding a spare, I can get a Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 in 255/85 R16 for $250 installed vs $400 for a 5th Cooper ST Maxx...

I thought about fabbing something up, but with the price of metal I'd probably be in it too much to not have a solution that looks as good as 4X's. Honestly the gap hasn't bothered me much all the years I've had mine. It would really only be a concern if you put a dog in the trunk area and they jump out.

If you were local I'd offer one of my old 255 ST Maxxes for your spare. Tires have gotten so expensive lately... I snagged all 5 of my skinny ST Maxxes 4 or 5 years ago for like $1100-1200 brand new. They're still in the garage Incase I stumble across another 4runner, not that I'm casually looking or anything...

No dog. No urgency here.. I'll wait.

I would love to not spend $$ on a matching spare if I could avoid it. Thanks for the offer in spirit!

Man I bought my Maxxis Bighorn 255/85's from Walmart for 189/tire and had them mounted with lifetime balance for 20/tire. Things have definitely gotten more expensive

Weekend update: 250,186

Installed ITREs and re-aligned with a tape measure and level. I will get it checked after I'm done with all my suspension upgrades. I ground a 30mm wrench down to fit the rack and used a big-ass pipe wrench to get to 73~ ft pounds by real feel. No more slip in turns.

Installed 4.88 front and rear differentials!
I didn't take pics cause working mostly alone and trying to get er done/working on tempo and being dirty.

Rear 3rd member
Opened fill and drain plugs and dumped what looked like almost new oil. No metal shavings/chips on the drain plug. Jacked up the car and supported the frame with jackstands and let the rear end drop to get full access to the pumpkin. Pulled the axles, sway bar and drive shaft. Used that opp to check and adjust e-brake and shoe/drum tension.

Removed third member
3 of my rear studs threaded out, the nuts were frozen, so I'll need to replace them, or all of the studs eventually. Closed them like bolts for now. Also need all new lock washers, mine were all tired and flat lol

Cleaned up the mounting surfaces on both the housing and 3rd member and sealed with a gasket from yotamasters, my FIPG was dried out :(

Cleaned and re-tested the actuator, I had to drive it off with a brass drift it was so frozen. Greased the O ring before install and tapped it on the "new" 3rd member.

Reinstalled axles and did a quick spin test, found the axles locked! The actuator must have moved the locking rack on install. Pulled the actuator and reset the rack (outside position), reinstalled and spun the wheels again - open diff/unlocked! Torqued everything down, filled with Lucas 85W 140 and bled the brakes with help.

Front clamshell
What a little *****. Removed front and trans skid. Opened fill and drain plugs and recollected my 75W 90 oil, will save for TC. Removed the Tacoma locking hub caps and base nuts/conical washers with with a brass drift with the wheels on, then jacked up the truck, supported with jackstands and removed the front wheels and the locking hub bases.

Removed axle retainer clips and CV axles by removing the 4 LBJ bolts and put the spindles back in place. Unbolted front drive shaft and moved it to the driver side. Unbolted the front diff rear bolt with a 13mm hex driver socket and pry bar as well as the 2 front mounting bolts with 19mm socket on a breaker bar and a 19mm box wrench up top.

With the diff loose I removed all the vent and vacuum lines and electrical connections, plugging everything to keep dirt from getting in. Unbolted the hose bracket and removed from the truck. This was the most contortionistic aspect of the job. Removed the 2-bolt passenger side front diff mount on the truck per a video I saw, didn't help.

Had to lift the trans about 1" with a jack. Unbolted 4 x 12mm trans mount bolts from the cross member. Unbolted the exhaust hanger (2 x 17mm) on the transmission passenger side to not stress the exhaust manifold. Put a block of wood on a jack and lifted the trans. At this point I was able to lift, wiggle and curse the front diff out and onto another jack and roll it out.

Swapped passenger extension and actuator as well as axle stub shaft into the new ECGS clamshell. Cleaned all surfaces and flushed with brake cleaner. Used a punch to remove the stub shaft from my old carrier and a dead blow to install it after dipping it in gear oil into the new carrier. Used Permatex grey on the passenger extension to clamshell and torqued to spec.

The driver side axle seal was installed new by ECGS (nice surprise) and I installed a new passenger side axle seal. I did not replace the needle bearing or outer bearing since I have manual hubs, the CVs only turn when I lock my hubs.

Reinstalling the front diff was basically the opposite of removal, went well with help. Reinstalled hose bracket, hoses and electrical connection and then bolted up the diff and driveshaft torquing everything to spec. Dropped trans and had to guide the mount back into position on the crossmember and bolted back up the 4 x 12mm bolts and the 2 x 17mm exhaust bracket.

Greased CV inner splines and the axle seals in the diff and reinstalled axles, spindles, etc. Torqued everything wheel/LBJ and filled the front diff with Lucas 85W 140. It took considerably less than the book since I had ECGS install a Spartan locker in there. Reinstalled skid plates and reviewed all things I touched to make sure everything was connected and torqued.

This whole job took 2 days, working mostly alone taking very few breaks but it was worth it. Quick functional testing and driving - no issues!

Next weekend is the first wheeling trip with the new diffs. Can't wait!

Weekend update 250,660

Went to Arrowhead for the long weekend and did a shakedown run / break-in for new 4.88 gears and spartan locker (front diff)

There's a trailhead behind our house that leads to this, 3-way junction
3efc8ac9f61eeb63faa8d209affd1858.jpg

We took 3N34 to 3N34D

aa71c1339e812b8c7300f8dd090e1bfa.jpg

Used 4Hi and Lo just to get the gears hot, could have done the whole run in 2WD

Truck performed like a champ!

Met another off-road driver on the trail with a rolled bead and helped them out with a few tools they were missing (like a working jack). The driver told me about another entrance to 3N34 just past the Marina I was not aware of... it led us to that 3-way junction, too.

Ordered Cabin Filter PN 62940-35010

Installed Aisin Master Clutch Cylinder CMT-093

I tried to order from the website but I could never checkout so I sent an email on Monday and got a reply from Rick himself offering me to call in to place my order, so I did and I had a 30 minute conversation with Rick.

Rick has been running trails all over California, Utah, Colorado, Washington and Arizona for 30 years and mapping all the popular trails. A valuable resource and a wealth of knowledge.

Rick will be retiring soon but there will be others to continue the work, and Rick's legacy. Check out all info, products and free resources at SIDEKICK OFF ROAD - Home

His books are awesome.

I got the books for Utah, Colorado, and California. I used all of them a lot planning my trips to those places.

Bedded them in properly and they work great!

Alignment
Was getting some rubbing on the frame rail, back of the tire. Outboarded the rear LCA via my Cam Eliminators to the + position and set my SPC UCAs to E, from D, then aligned at a buddy's house. I left the front LCA cams at neutral.
