Over Drive problems - Help

I have owned this 1989 4runner 3.0 Auto for several months and the OD had always worked flawlessly. It would be in OD by the time I got to the end of my street. The truck started to overheat and I took it in and the Tech showed me the radiator was rusted and needed to change it out. Also he changed out the thermastate and a few other items.

When I got the truck back the OD would only work after it would warm up and I "turned" off and turned the truck back on. Then the OD would work perfect again. If I don't turn the truck off and back on it will "never" go in to OD. (The truck does not overheat any longer)

Hoping someone can help with a answer to this problem. So frustrating...

The O/D is designed not to kick in until the engine is warmed up.
But I can't think of why you'd have to cycle power to get it to work.
