ODB2 readers -- what to get?

You can put it into place with engine on/off, doesn't matter like an actual odb2 reader where you should never turn the engine on while it is in place.

Most bt odb2 units have an on/off button on them to allow you to turn it off without removing it. Yes, it goes in the same place as a standard odb2 reader, under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Luck! :cowboy:

Scangauge is another option (although more expensive) if you want something that' permanently mounted in the truck. It also adds some functionality you'll find in newer vehicles like the trip computer and miles to empty calculation. I just put one in mine but I haven't done a lot of driving so far. I have used it to check and clear codes though, and it does fine for that.

I had the ScanGauge in my Saturn for 4 years Untill a kid turned in front of me. The trip computer and MPG calculator was great. After setting up the tank MPG was always within .1 gal of what was expected to fill tank.

Can you actually clear the codes with the harbor freight scan tools or just look at them?

I've got an UltraGauge (cheaper version of a ScanGauge) that works just fine. I paid around $80 for it when I got it. It also has a trip-meter, so after you calibrate it, it tells you your instant MPG's, MPG-per-trip, overall MPG's, RPM's, etc. It can also read and clear engine codes! I'm happy with it, although I've had it unhooked and out of the car for a bit (just sitting on a shelf). Guess I should reinstall..
