Odd occurence I need help with

Just finished test drive after putting in plugs and putting everything back together. MAF and plugs changed. Total spent (after core charge refund) $125. Versus estimate over $600. WOOT!!!

Based on the opinions I've read here I'm going to refrain from installing the Bosch O2 sensors (front & rear). Found the same ones on NAPA (Denso this time) for about the same price. Plus NAPA gives us a LE discount and Autozone does not.

They gave me an estimate for my front and rear catalytic converters:
labor= $92
parts= $2533 (3 gaskets & front/rear converters)
supplies= $27.50 (which I'm assuming is lube, staples, bubblegum chewed while working,etc)
sales tax=$153

If anyone knows how this can be done without mechanic involvement, or a thread I've missed please help.

I came back to this thread at the end of page one and started to reply to warn you of the plugs and wires you had installed before.

Glad to see Brian2Sun got on you pretty quick!!! Glad to hear you took his advice and got good results. A lot of time we like quick results but like he said if you replace 5 things at once and get it fixed when the same problem comes back you will have to start on all 5 again!!

It's your money (I sound like a JG Wentworth commercial, eh?) and you can spend it however you want but why do you think you need new cats?

Cause I'm getting error codes that have to do with emissions and cannot pass emissions with them and therefore can't get my car tag. This forces me to drive around in an improperly tagged vehicle which is hypocritical to say the least for a person in LE.

Was under the truck today and took a good look at the cats. It looks like they just bolt together and have gaskets between them. IS THIS JUST A MATTER OF UNSCREWING THE OLD ONES AND INSTALLING NEW ONES???

It sounds to me like your transmission is doing what mine does. Mine only does it after initial start up, but I was told its some kind of sensor in the transmission that needs to reach a certain temperature before it will allow the transmission to shift properly. I don't know if it's true, but after a few minutes, the transmission shifts smoothly.

I don't believe you are saying this is a problem or are you?

I just wanted to add that I belive this is common. Mine does the same thing and so did my landcruiser....was also told that many other landcruiser owners did this also. It's more annoying than anything.

I was just thinking your that previous problem with the spark plugs could have been responsible for those codes. You should clear them to see if they come back. Also, maybe you have a bad sensor? Cats don't usually go bad. What codes do you get?

More cause for celebration!!!

Drove to meet my carpool partner yesterday after installing front O2 sensor and then back home this morning. WOke up and was driving to work and noticed NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS<NO VSC<TRAC nothing!!! WOOT. I thought --I'm getting my ass over to emissions testing before this beast changes her mind. Got checked and.....................failed. But the tech said there were no codes and the engine hadn't had enough time/miles to reset yet. There was less then 60 miles on it at time of test. He said drive 150miles or 3 - 4 days and then return for a free retest. His thoughts were that it would probably pass based on what I told him I had happening and what I'd done to correct it. So yeah great news and I'm NOT gonna spend a sh!t ton of money to replace CATS on my truck. I still am gonna replace the rear O2 sensor but otherwise my next concern will be the Valve cover gasket replacement (seems they are leaking/seeping a little).

Well not that I had a spare $2800 to start with but I'll spend about $200 on my brakes and drums (doing it myself) $400 on my water pump and timing belt replacement (for a car not this truck). The rest of my overtime pay from working Xmas eve, Xmas day, New year's eve and New Years day and an extra day for a guy to be home with his family after xmas will go towards my birthday wishlist of LE toys and stuff for my home gym.
