Quick question: Is it possible to manipulate the digital odometer readings of the later model 3rd gens? I'm asking because in my search for a 3rd gen, some seem to be "too good to be true" pricing for the miles they have. I'm wondering if rolled back the mileage. Thanks in advance.

I replaced the gauge cluster plastic on my 2000, it just pops off and you are able to access everything behind it. Because it is digital the gauge cluster is not sealed. I don't recall if that information is stored within the gauge cluster itself or within the vehicle computer. If it is stored within the gauge cluster itself it would be possible to fake lower miles by purchasing a used on on eBay or something of the nature. Install it and then never have the dealership calibrate the correct miles onto the gauge cluster.
If I were you I would get my local Toyota Dealership a call and ask if that would be possible. I would also pull a Carfax report and check the odometer reading on that. See if it is consistent. Also check the maintenance records to see if they are consistent. Easy way for that would be oil changes, they always record the mileage when you get it changes. If all that fails, remember, if it too good to be true it usually is.

Most likely this has nothing to do with the odometer and more to do with the vehicle you are looking at being a scam. I bet if you e-mail them, they will tell you the vehicle is in another state and they will ship it to you for a deposit.
Too good to be true almost always is.

Or if you send $1000 to Nigeria they will ship you the 4runner with $2000 cash. It's easy to swap clusters between trucks, Kanger328. I have seen auctions where people take two 3rd gens (say a Limited and an SR5), the cheaper of the two with lower miles (SR5), and put it's gauge cluster in the Limited just to get more for it.
That's what records are for, I guess.
