Odyssey vs. Diehard Platinum Batteries

Your choice for sure, but you have a lot of life left in that battery. Panasonic is one of the best. hate to cut its work time short.

What is it about the Platinum that makes it better and fetches over $200? I have used the Diehard Golds a few times and every one has lasted 7-8 years here in the MN winters and do it for almost half the price.

I've never heard of a bad experience with optima batteries from anyone I know directly.

A friend gave me one that had a gaping hole in the side where a side terminal had melted out... he got it off a friend who had had it for years and years, and my friend had it for quite a while in his car (and it started no problem in -30C, even with the hole :S). Anyway, my wife said "Nope, not using that..." so I recycled it. It still boosted a car after sitting in my garage for a year though.

Another friend had an old '86 diesel cruiser that had a hole in the fuel pump diaphragm, making fuel drain back to the tank after a while of sitting. Sometimes it'd take a few minutes of cranking to start up. While I'm sure that wasn't great for the starter, but there's motors out there smaller than that starter... anyway, I do recall that his entire office watched him start up the beast one day when it was -38C out, and the old girl fired up thanks to twin yellow top optimas... it just took 5 minutes of cranking and alot of smoke. It was badass.

The red top in my truck is only a year old, so time will tell if it will maintain my high opinion of optimas. Regardless, I would still endorse the product to anyone.

Otherwise, a kirkland signature is what I would buy, they're made by the same facility as energizers. My old Supra used a kirkland for many years without issues: I left an interior light on for a week in December and it still fired right up.

Wal-mart batteries have received pretty good reviews. Very easy to del with the numb nutz at Wal-Mart as they don't know enough to question you.

But I do like the Sears platinum batteries. I bought 6 this summer. 4 for the boat and one for Audi and her Honda SUV. My 4runner still has the Panasonic in it.

Well I went to Sears Saturday morning and picked up a P5 (group 35) Diehard Platinum. I got it home and was about to throw it in, but then I held it up next to my stock Panasonic and had second thoughts. It is significantly smaller than the Panasonic so I did a little more research.

Even thought the P5 Diehard Platinum has 740 cold cranking amps, and the Panasonic comes in it 710 CCA, the smaller P5 has almost half the reserve capacity. The reserve capacity on the DH was 100, while the Panasonic comes in at 160. Again, if this was just an around town car for me, I'd be more than happy with a smaller battery. But for offroading, camping, long road trips, etc., I'd like to have a little more battery under the hood.

This is something that I'd be interested in doing. It looks like this battery will just barely fit with a few minor modifications to the mount and the length of Terminals. I might take the DH P5 back and look into something like this.

As a follow up, I spent 4hrs Saturday washing all the suv's and had my truck playing music the entire time. Even when the panasonic was new it could only do that maybe 2.5hrs. This battery has a lot of capacity to play for that long & still start the truck up like nothing happened.

I'm happy with the choice I made.

My OEM Panasonic was starting to slow down this winter so I picked up a Die Hard Platinum Group 35 this past weekend. I didn't feel like going bigger, I just wanted to throw in what they recommended. Fires up a lot faster now. I usually go with EverStart Maxx from Walmart but I've heard great reviews from the Platinum. I've had Optima batteries in the past and I was never impressed.

I picked up a Odyssey 34R-PC1500 fit very well no mods needed The (R) is whats needed. I looked at a few Diehards but found a deal online. Both are almost the same but they don't make the 34R-1500 in a Diehard.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I didn't pull the trigger on a new battery until this week. My ol' trusty Panasonic gave me a few warning signs that the end was near so it gave me a new sense of urgency.

I ended up going with the Odyssey 34R-PC1500 instead of the diehard. I wanted to make one of the Diehard options work, but I didn't have the time to mod the factory leads for a Diehard. The Odyssey is a little smaller than the stock Panasonic, but has more CCA's and should last just as long, if not longer.

Wish I'd seen this thread earlier... I have the Diehard P34 (I think?) it bolted right in with no problems. Sears had it listed as a direct fit in their catalog.

[MENTION=14378]G.I.G.[/MENTION] interesting, your radiator cap is on the driver side? What happened there? Did I miss something? Normally there on the passenger side. Is your V8 maybe that's why?

Actualy I can and did compare many batteries. I was sold on the high CCA, reserve capacity and reviews.

As heavy as it is, it probably should be in a tractor

Interesting, when I went to costco they told me they didn't have a replacement. Did you just buy and self install?

I went in and got the one that was made for the 4runner according to their fitment booklet. I installed it in the parking lot as I was dropping off my core at the same time. Battery was $92 out the door.

Maybe it depends on location. This last spring the fitment guide at the costco in Albuquerque didn't have a replacement for my 2006, SR5, V6 can't recall the number but it had the bigger battery in it and I wanted to replace with same
