OE navigation useless?

I got a 06 Ltd with the nav. With 4 of every 5 addresses that i put in to the nav, the nav spits back that the house address doesn't exist. This includes my apt, my parents house, the restaurant i went to last night. What gives?

Has anyone else run into this issue? Is there a more updated DVD? build date is 12/05 i think.

You might want to update the Navigation DVD. Version 7.1 of the map DVD was in my 2008 Toyota Nav e7008. Version 8 is out and the DVD will be updated again sometime in October, which is when Toyota updates the Nav DVD's.
 
I've had good luck with the OE Toyota Nav unit (e7008) in my truck. The navigation spoken and display are much better (in my opinion) than the Garmin Nuvi unit my wife uses in her car (a Nuvi 780 with MSN direct and the latest Garmin map updates by NavTeq).

I'm not sure how much better the Eclipse units are than the Toyota OE Nav units since they are made by the same company (Fujitsu).

My main grump about the Toyota OE Nav system is that it uses the same map database as Garmin (Navteq). The Navteq database doesn't have my subdivision mapped correctly with street names listed incorrectly, etc... as well as my address is listed incorrectly. I've contacted them many times and the maps still aren't updated. Other than that it usually finds the address I enter (if I enter it correctly) unless the road is not in the map database. I am looking forward to the Nav DVD update. There are a few new roads that I travel that aren't on the old map DVD that would be useful to have listed.

If we're critiquing areas of the Toyota OE Nav that we don't like, I don't care for the mp3 display. It doesn't display tag info at all, only raw file information. I'd prefer to see the mp3 tag info.

The Maps are the key to any GPS Nav. system,sadly they don't always depict the real world of roads and streets&address's. I don't see this changing until we get real time satellite real pictures of the earth. It's coming just when that's a good question.:)

What I like about the Garmin GPSs is how easy the updating of their firm wear is. I don't go for needing a DVD for updating.:(

I agree 100% with you. it would be nice to be able to plug in a USB drive or insert a CD-R and update the map and/or firmware without having to purchase a DVD from the dealer for $200+.

As we soon learn anything that is OEM and you need your stealership to get it, it's going to be a BIG costly item. This is how they make their money.:mad:

Sadly there are many who just depend on their stealerships to take care of their 4Runners. And they are waiting to get their money.

It's never a small item that is small in cost when your dealing with any dealers service Dept. Everything is by design a BIG money maker for them.:bash:

Just stop in and ask your stealerships service Dept. to check your A/C.;):

I don't care if it's been cooling great, they will tell you they need to service it and fix any leaks. even if there are no leaks.

Time you check out I bet it's going to cost you over $100 if your lucky and they only added one can of R134a.

Now if the A/C guy has been having a slow day, Your going to find out you needed a lot more then a can of 134a added. Trust me your going to get skinned and skinned real GOOD.:mad:
 
I just checked my dvd, and it is the 8.1. Isn't that the latest version. That's no fun. When the new one does come out, isn't it all just data. Which means that the dvd could be copied/imaged/bit torrented. Not that any of us would do something like that...
 
I've had an OEM navi and now I have an Eclipse 6620, which is nearly identical to the OEM navi, but with added features, such as DVD playback. I also have a NUVI for the other car that doesn't have factory navigation. I actually prefer the OEM and Eclipse systems over the NUVI. The bigger screen is so much nicer, plus the fact that it is integrated into the car and the stereo mutes automatically, etc...

As far as the way they work, I don't think any one is better than the other. The mapping seems about the same. But one advantage of the OEM and Eclipse systems is the POI database, which is much better than the one on the NUVI. That may not be important to everyone, but I love it when I'm in an unfamiliar area and looking for restaurants or stores.

I've had issues at times loading addresses into the OEM navigation and find loading addresses into my navigation in this order works best:

1. City
2. Street Name
3. Street Number

For whatever reason, the navigation unit "finds" the address this way...

Yep, according to my dealer 8.1 is the latest version.
 
8.1 is the most recent version and I know it might sound stupid, but check to make sure you are in the correct region.

And as a previous post states the best way to find an address is City then Street then Number.
 
i agree with banker1 on the way to enter the address. i have been doing that for the past few months and have no issues.

do you live in a newly developed area? i only get errors when i'm in a brand new development. and mine is really old (from a 2005 OEM nav). so it's really strange that you're having this problem.
 
In addition to the search by address, you may have not noticed that you can search by phone number (again make sure that you are in the correct geographical area). I've found that this works well so long as the phone number was in existence when the DVD was made.
 
I would say 75% of the addresses I needed were on my 2005 nav. I don't see much improvement in my parents 2006 disc.
