OEM Audio + 5th Gen 4Runner audio system

I finished up my 6X9 install this weekend. I think I may have figured out why these were initially delayed. It would seem that the lower two mounting holes had tabs glued over them so that the speaker would properly align with the screw locations on the door. Longer screws were included for the lower two holes on the speaker to accommodate the added thickness from the tabs. At first glance I didn't notice these tabs until they popped off while I was screwing the speaker into place. I epoxied them back on, but worry they could easily pop off at some point in the future simply from speaker vibration.

Anyhow, I contacted OEM Audio and they were very quick to respond and ship out a new pair, which I have not received yet. I am just curious if any other users had similar issues or if perhaps there is an updated 6X9 on the way with proper lower screw holes. Also, an updated 6X9 that does not require the installer to relocate the wiring harness around the side of the speaker. I am in no way bashing OEM Audio. I am super happy with this speaker package and their customer service. I would definitely recommend it to others. I just wanted to share in case others had similar issues.

Water. I've seen other OEM stuff, Jeep, Dodge etc. I've never seen anything that bad as the 4runner. don't get me wrong, I love this thing.

Replying to the 6x9's issue: I did notice that one or two holes didn't align up very well. But I didn't notice the glued on tabs. I was wondering why it had screws included. I used the original screws without any issues. I was also somewhat annoyed with different position of the connecter. But not too much of a big deal.

I received my six by nines today. I will try to get them installed in the next couple days. Can't wait to hear how the complete system sounds.

Checked out my 6x9's and they have the glued tabs, too ... so far I have loved this system, but I am not going to lie, I am not too impressed with this aspect.

This leads me to believe that the CAD for these are incorrect, resulting in a very expensive, incorrect mold tool to make the housings. I understand that they've created a unique, custom setup for our vehicles but I don't think the glued-on tabs is a fair solution/proper solution - they've basically reworked the "bad" batch with glue. Caveat - I am not fully aware of all the ramifications regarding what had happened, but if there's going to be a delay for the proper housing, I'd have to imagine most people wouldn't mind waiting. I'm certain the the corrective action is not a "tool-safe" modification so they lead time is going to be another 2-3 weeks for the work. Then, you have to factor in the actual time to takes to "shot" the parts and then calculate the shipping time.

Good Lord - these 6x9 speakers are a mess ... two glued tabs and a third tab with another hole drilled in in half overlapping the pre-existing hole ... for nearly $1700 and an advertised emphasis on quality fit and finish and a "clean look" I am kind of shaking my head a little here. I already had to re-configure the 10-pin connector to the head unit until 12am when I did the first install.

Anyone have any opinions on what would you do if the Amp or DSP failed some day down the road? Would this system be useless at that point? To be more specific, I am only asking the question as I am guessing that you could not just add any old AMP or DSP to the system if one should fail and the company is no longer producing a replacement. Thoughts?

That's a good question ... I guess it's a risk with any proprietary system. But OEM Audio+ has been in business 10 years, so they are at least not a start-up.

Note the two top-left left holes, not even the same size as the other holes? Looks like one hole was off and someone just drilled on next to it? The bottom two holes are the ones that have the tabs glued over them.

mine were the same way. Don't really see a problem to it. I mean we can wait another few months for some new 6x9's with proper holes to get made up.
I doubt there will be too many cases of broken tabs on the bottom. They are precision fitment, and seem to be glued or plastic welded on pretty solidly.

Well, once installed the glued tabs won't be a problem even if the glue comes loose ... the bolts will hold them in.

If the tabs come loose once installed there will be nothing for the bolts to hold onto on the speaker.

once installed, the tabs act like large washers clamping the bottom of the speaker down.. Even if the tabs came loose.. its not going anywhere.

Exactly ... it's all kind of hacky, but it looks like it will work, and it beats waiting months for new speakers. A little disappointing quality control, especially given the other issue I had, but the system already sounds awesome and I expect it to sound even better once I get these puppies in there.

I guess you would just need to have seen how mine broke off once installed. There is a front and back tab that glues over the existing tabs to make somewhat of an extension tab. When the front and back tab broke free, there was no part of the lower speaker that was in contact with the screw. At that point only the top two screws were holding the speaker in place.

sorry, i should have looked in the past few pages. I guess a lot of us are lucky in that ours have not broken yet. But looking at it, it could pose a problem over time where our tabs might eventually break like yours.

No worries. And I am not trying to harp on OEM Audio at all. I am very happy with their product and the sound it produces. If anything I was just trying to give everyone a heads up to maybe not over tighten the lower 2 bolts.

Also, it looks like my replacement speakers should be delivered today. If they are any different I will post some pictures.

Ah ha - I see what you mean, now ... I didn't notice that detail. OK, now this is seriously hacky.
