OEM Battery Cable Size and Terminal Replacement In later model 5th Gen

I've done some searching and can't find it, although I swear I've seen it before and I'm sure someone will link to it as soon as I post this :P

Can anyone help me with the guage of battery cables? There are two sizes on the common - I am guessing 2 ga and 4 ga - and it seems the positive has both 2 ga. Is this correct?

Also there doesn’t seem to be any extra length in the cables at all. Has anyone been able to replace oem terminals with military style?

Yep. Just confirmed. On a recent model there is zero extra cable to pull to replace the crimp rings and the cable is so stiff you can’t twist it so that you can fit the existing brackets onto a military terminal.
Not sure what to do here. The existing terminals suck and at the outset are tightened to the point of metal touching so eventually the metal will fail.

Any advice?

Make new cables and use the biggest cable you can afford. Seriously there's nothing wrong with running all 0 gauge, it's an upgrade worth doing. Just get OFC cable and stay away from the cheap crap CCA cable.

Nothing will fail. The factory stuff is proven to last.

if you're not changing battery size or doing something where you need a different length cable, just leave it as-is. it is fine, nothing is going to fail.

if you are just deadset on making your own cables and changing to military style just run new 0 gauge wires
 
I wanted military style so I can attach accessories without it looking like a rats nest. I’ll have at least two new cables on each terminal if not three.

You can’t replace the cables bc the cable that goes into the fuse box is inaccessible.

I’ve seen someone tap a second bolt on the existing lugs. I guess I can do that if it comes down to it.
Just surprised that so many people with pre-2014 models have been able to do the terminal switch.

the battery cables on my 2016 and another family member 2007 cables have not been a problem. cables are of proper size with the correct battery.

question I have is , why do you have these issues . used wrong battery or did some modification ?

on cables measure diameter go to electrical supply store and buy the cables of the same or slightly larger size..with the correct lugs solder them on the new cable then using a crimping tool lock them in..

crimping tool will be expensive to crimp these big cables .most DIY will buy prefab cables ..too much work ..
 
I’m Adding accessories that need to connect directly to the battery.
Military terminals are a cleaner way to do it than the OEM terminals.

My plan was just to replace the lugs on the existing cables but there is no slack so they wouldn’t reach if I were to do that.
As I’ve already stated you can’t simply replace the oem cables bc of the cable going to the fuse box. You can search for a “big 3” post to see it discussed.

Many people have upgraded the terminals on the first version of the 5th gen. I’m asking to see if anyone has done it on the post 2014 models and if so how.

I have a hydraulic crimper. Light duty ones are relatively inexpensive.

Where the wires bolt onto the clamp, bolt onto the wires from there for your military terminal

Are you saying to bolt on an extension or use the existing lugs to bolt to the new terminal? I tried the latter and the former seems unsafe but I’m clearly not an expert here.
