OEM front skid screw replacements?

My front skid plate needs to come off next weekend when I install my lift and diff drop. Those self-tapping screws Toyota used to mount the skid plate are all rounded off and will need to be drilled out.

I remember reading somewhere that they can be replaced with M8 cap screws, but what pitch? The holes need to be retapped since the self-tapping screws are some kind of weird thread, right?

You should be fine with M8x1.25.

Mine are basically stripped out. So everything is held in with a , bolt and a nut. To me it's much safer with a nut the. Just the bolt going through.

Retap or use bolt and nut.

Well, I used a tap as a thread chaser to clean up the threads after having to drill out a bolt but I wouldn't call it retapping, as in changing the thread pitch.

The bolts may have a little notch on them to clean the threads as they are installed, but they are definitely NOT self-tapping. At least, the stock ones aren't.

If you have something non-stock on there, that's a different story...

I replaced mine recently and just got M8x1.25 from Ace and some lock washers and it did great, didnt have to retap... but mine also came out clean... and I was missing half of them...

Hah, funny timing. I actually just replaced my front skid plate bolts. The old ones were cross threaded and done thanks to the negligent oil techs. I retapped the holes with a M8X1.25 tap.

I bought the 5 front skid plate bolts from the dealer for $5 and change total.

That's just how I'd heard other people refer to them. I think they're OEM.

Put some anti seize on them when you replace them. Those bolts ALWAYS seize in place after a while and will break off when trying to remove them. Both my Runners had broken bolts when I got them.
