Oem radio compatibility

Well bros, as the title suggests, I am trying to find some info about which Toyota head units might be plug and play on the 3rd gen 4Runner. Mine looks pretty rough with some paint missing from the buttons and whatnot. I really like the sterility of an oem unit and there is a bounty of them on eBay. Just wondering if any of the newer units would plug into our harness or if I'd have to get the exact same one that I have now.

Yeah i would definitely tap the supply of used 4Runner units but i was curious as to whether or not a newer unit with more features might be compatible. Ie, bluetooth or native aux input capability.
 
I'm not studied on it, but I believe some of the Scion headunits are compatible with little or no modification, but I have no idea which ones. Very interested to hear what people find.
 
After doing a bit of research, it looks like id be best suited with an aftermarket unit. Some of them are pretty cheap these days.
 
I got a nice unit on amazon for $100 it has blue tooth and a aux port and a usb port I think its a pioneer cant remember but I like it and they are real easy to install. Also with todays sterios you can delete the factory amp so you dont have that pos in the loop anmore, most head units now push out 52wattsx4 more then anough for factory speakers.

Absolutely!!!! Stock units sucked new. Mine got pulled the day the truck came from the dealer in '99. I'm on my third upgrade to newer HU's along the way.
 
Just ordered a pioneer fhx820bs from Amazon. It has every feature that I was looking for and the price was less than $140. Bluetooth audio and hands free calling, usb, and aux right on the front so no additional wiring and it claims to have 210,000 different text colors so hopefully one of those matches the rest of the instruments.

I ordered the same one. Lot of nice features for a good price. I like that it has the dual Bluetooth option so the stereo will automatically recognize both my wife's phone and mine when we drive it.

Should be here tomorrow. :guitar3:

Certain Scion head units are plug-n-play on our 4runners.

I installed a t1809 without too much trouble, but trimming of the stock bezel is required. If I could do it again, I would have ordered a direct fit like the OP, only because I found the trimming to be a PITA. However it is nice to have mp3 support and Ipod control built in while looking stock (aside from the scion logo on the HU).

The t1807 and t1808 units work as well
