OEM security system

On the ignition there's a ring around the keyhole that says

"Security System"

Does that mean my 2k1 has a programmable key?

I don't know if that means that you have keyless entry. Just saying that there is a chip that comes inside the black plastic part of your key. It basically means that your ignition can't be cracked open and bypassed. Is there a security light just to the right of your rear window button?
 
No there's no glass breakage sensor panel, there is a "security" light on the center console. All I got with the car was the key/fob
 
Someone else will have to chime in on that one. I just know that the ring around the ignition is referring to the chipped key for the starter disable. I know that there are plenty of threads that have covered this many times. Best of luck!
 
When did the chip key come out? I know for a fact mine can be started with pliers if you remove the lock cylinder ('97)
 
A couple of things need to be sorted out:

1. When you say "Key / Fob". Do you mean rubber coated key? For "Fob" it would be the remote entry plastic fob with buttons.

2. The "Security indicator" would be a lit car logo with a picture of a padlock. This is the engine emobilizer logo. You will NOT be able to start your truck with pliers.

I have a 1999 so can't "know" what your dash or instrument area looks like. My key area simply has the lit ring and "lock, on and start" etched into the metal. I'd bet money your key has a chip. You can have it tested at any place, like Lowe's, that has a key maker. The machine can also test for chipped keys.

My vehicle also has etched Vin on ALL glass and a "VIP vehicle intrusion protection" stickers on the two front windows. And, "VEHICLE PROTECTION PACKAGE" sticker on the drivers side passenger window. It also has "PERMA VIN" stickers on both passenger rear windows. I also have the blinking light with the glass breakage mic on the lower left of the dash panel.

I say all of this to give you some indication of the protection level available from Toyota. I don't know what was "Standard VS Optional".

The chipped key, I believe, was standard after the technology became available. Can't be sure though.

None of this means anything to you unless you can find some other evidence for yourself.

Quick test. Lock the car with someone inside, wait about one minute and have them open the door. If the alarm goes off, starting the vehicle with the key will reset it / deactivate it.

I'm 99% certain that it is a chipped key.

Etching is a dealer applied feature.

So you have a fob then?

If it has the rear window button, then it's factory; if not then its dealer installed RS3200.

Your post confuses me. If you have the fob then what's the problem? A lot of people unknowingly purchase the Sequoia remote by accident.
 
Does that remote code work for ALL 4runners? Mine came without the fob, but the box etc are still installed. Not sure which fob to get though...
 
Sorry, that took a minute. I had to search your posts: 97 SR5 V6 MT E.LOCKER EVERGREEN PEARL.

So, here's the poop. NO

For 1997 and earlier three was no factory system available. Dealer installed....RS3000 and does NOT have a window button.

For 1996 - 97 it was a black fob w/two buttons with a rocker style look to it, not the two very separate placed ones. An LED indicator too.

For 1998 - 02 it was also an RS3000 but used a grey remote, same style w/LED indicator. NOTE: A factory remote option became available in 1999.

The programming instructions, for 1997 was available via TSB-AX005-99

The additional information I posted is due to the fact that manufacturers often integrate some changes during a given model years production. Knowing just when yours rolled out may indicate, however "remote", the chances are that you could possibly need the grey remote instead. I'd just go with the black one first.

For Canada, I have no idea whatsoever; But probably the same?

Thanks! The vehicle was stolen in 2000 and stripped.... so I wonder if the security system was installed after that, or when it was new. Guess I'll try my luck with a black one to start! I thought about asking my local dealer, but I don't make it a habit of doing stuff like that when I know right off I won't be buying from them.
 
That will do it. Yes it was also used on the other vehicles listed for the same model years. Get your hands on the TSB as there may very well be programming variances.

Keys are not programmable, per sie, just that they are matched to the particular car/imobilizer.

The same with fobs; they work or don't when "paired" to the vehicle.

Functions of the car can (maybe) be "Programmed". Like window function, lock functions and horn volume. I am not aware of the actual specifics for yours, but for my Audi, I can change certain functions like these.:keyboard:
 
The last time I tried to customize my FOB functions...didn't really work out all that well. I couldn't ever get it to stop auto locking, and auto setting the alarm within 10 seconds of closing the door :bash:
