OEX 2 Day Training 4/17 - 4/18

I'm trying to put together a 2 day training module run at OEX over in East Haddam, Conn.

I was looking at an 8 truck limit, this will take place April 17/18 a Friday/Saturday

I started a thread over in the NE section of ExPo, and FJNortheasters

Off-road driving school. Overland recreational, professional and military training. 4x4 travel. ? Overland Experts

I did 3 days at OEX a few years ago with my mostly stock 4Runner, and now that I've made a few mods, I'd like to raise the bar....but I'm going with what the majority wants.

I received an email from the instructor that quoted a price of $200 per person, per day. I would plan on a $25 tip per person for our instructor at the end.

This price is an awesome price...they generally charge $600-700 a day. PM your email and I will PM you the 2 day itinerary...pretty intense.

They are also allowing us to camp there overnight.

There is also another campground which will open April 15th, about 15 minutes or so from OEX. They have tent and trailer sites, and also cabins.

I wish I was closer! My bro-in-law and I are doing two days in May at their VA location @ $375/day so this is an awesome deal.

I live fairly close to OEX so if you guys are grabbing dinner or beers after I would definitely be interested in stopping by to meet everyone.
 
Oh ya :). A solid 11 hour day yesterday, goin back for more !

On top of everything else we learned, I received a Hilift demo and how to remove debris from your bead and reseat/re inflate lesson.
 
I'm sure other people will chime in about what a great weekend this was.

For my part, I realized that my 4runner is pretty incredible. I drove through the OEX rock garden, and took what I considered the worst route through it, learned how to effectively drive with two feet to keep momentum up hills, learned how to safely fail a hill, learned how to use rocks to build up a base to keep other folks rigs off rocks through an obstacle, watched Mark bump Pats 4runner using a kinetic rope, operated a Hi Lift even though I insisted I didn't want to ( Eric said: you're not getting off that easy!). All the while, Eric, our instructor, was patient, professional, so knowledgeable, and was still willing to push me out of my comfort zone, because that's how one learns things.

Oh, and he tolerated Pat pretty well too.

Here are some pictures for anyone interested. To be honest they don't really do justice to the terrain we conquered.

OEX Training April 2015

Overall impressions and some highlights of learnings:

  • Professional crew, well run, good materials
  • Great instructors, Erik and Don were full of info and real world stories
  • Instructors went above and beyond what was in the agenda and timeline, I think they liked having an interested team to teach
  • Break Throttle Modulation (BTM) - probably the most useful thing I learned that can be used with any vehicle when it is spinning wheels
  • @Catskillrunner pointed this out - learning what your vehicle can actually do - that insane hill we drove the first day seemed like childsplay by the end of the training
  • learn the system and use the system, when it hits the fan you follow the plan
  • the importance of a MOG, you can't see sh*t when you're in the sh*t
  • 2012 Limited design flaw - the lowest part of the undercarriage is a 6 inch section of muffler that drops 1-2 inches below everything else, right at the breakover point - don't know what the engineers were thinking on that one
  • how little you really need to get your vehicle ready for the trails
  • they taught the basics without using any of the vehicles special features like traction or terrain assist, this was probably another critical element to the training. Erik mentioned some "button pushing" courses that teach you how to use all of the buttons in your vehicle, this training was a little more old school. Those buttons are still there, and I'll probably use them, but it's good to know how to get over terrain without it.
  • good group of participants and mix vehicles and experience
 
I have to say that our OEX Training was top notch..but the people in our group were even better!

Special thanks to everyone that took the time to come out and take part in this. I hope you all are able to gain some confidence in your equipment and knowledge to safely and sucessfully enjoy some off roading. Looking forward to our next module, something we can shot for down the road.
 
Wow, what a great training weekend !!!! I could not believe the stuff we did with our rigs

The trainers at OEX were fantastic, depth of knowledge and ability to talk us through each step and many "how the heck do I do this?" lessons we applied on ups and downs that I, for one, was blown away by.

On to more adventuring, hope to see all my classmates at future events!

I'm still considering MAOF in August, wasnt sure the itinerary? I'm already signed up for VOR in October, can't wait to learn more andhit some trails in VT.

Now I need to figure out how to put a rear locker in.....
