off road battery

maybe batteries have gotten better over the years, but Ive busted batteries in the past when off roading, either a plate busts loose or one of the poles in the battery busts loose
since I do hit some bumpy roads when exploring back roads, don't want a problem

what are you guys running.....optima's ?
model numbers and brands ?

Optima seems to have gone downhill in the last 8 years or so. They used to be great.

Really pleased with my Exide AGM battery. Sealed cell, etc.

+1 on staying away from Optima, have not heard anything good about them in a long time.

Edit: you can get these on Amazon of all places, pricing is similar to local pickup. I'll get a PN at lunch and post the link.

Hmm. I pretty much run the cheapest battery I can get my hands on but with the highest cranking amps. Being in CO I have found the expensive batteries to fail pretty quickly with our winters. I have never had a battery break internally wheeling for over 15 years. You must be getting off the ground for that type of failure.
 
I like Interstate batteries.

Whatever you do, do not waste your money on an Optima battery, they are terrible now. My red top didn't even last 3 years!
 
I am running Excide batteries in two of my 4Runners and plan to get one for my Tacoma as soon as it needs a new battery. They are affordable, well built, and turn the motor over with ease.
 
Don't remember the model, but Interstate is easily one of, if not THE best brand overall. It's all I buy for everything.
 
Optima has gone way downhill in quality over the last 10 years. :noidea:

The only batteries you should see in a trophy truck or desert car are the ODYSSEY extreme drycell (AGM) batteries. They work extremely well.

This is what I will be installing shortly.

I like my Toyota True Start battery. It's cheaper than a parts store one because there's no core charge and then you have a battery to sell to the scrap yard.
 
I used to run Duralast 5 year batteries in everything and they would last about 5 years. Now they last about 2.5. Auto Zone good about honoring the warranty but I have had to swap in as many as three batteries to get the full 5 out of one.

I recently switched to Interstate because Costco sells 'em cheap and is also good about warranty.

We shall see.

yes I have pretty cold winters here too where I live and work.
well the failures were a while back in my sons and mine off road taco set up with dana axles, pretty stiff
and a friends Nissan pathfinder with a Nissan battery

the battery in now is only a 1 year old 5 year battery
maybe I am over worrying this
 
for normal use, I like an Interstate..

for offroad, I prefer the optima. I know everyone says they are junk now, and were good 10 years ago.
10 years ago people were saying the same thing.

ive had zero issues with my optima's. though, I run the blue tops. maybe they are different/better?


for what you are wanting, a direct replacement Interstate will likely work just fine.
 
my previous red top ran about 12 years. it died last year, and i replaced it with another one. i guess i'll see how well it compares to the old one...
 
Hmm something with strong cold cranking Amps will be good. Everyone is going to have a different story. I had Duralast silver for few years and it took a poop out of the blue. Don't really have insane winters in NJ. So I got optima red for $10 extra. Autozone warrantied my old battery and let me pay the difference.

Well after I said this I'm going to have a failure in the mountains. LOL. Knock on wood!!

Oriely's Super Start Platinum. It's an AGM battery for $165 bucks and the specs are pretty damn good. That is what I have.
