I recently purchased a '17 Off Road (not premium). It had nav in addition to the Entune (which allows you to connect your phone and use your phone for Nav). I wanted the heated seats and homelink... so the dealer offered to install those options - $750 (approx.) for both. The homelink is integrated into a self-dimming mirror. I preferred the no sunroof option and cloth seats.

The fully adjustable seat might be a big sell for me. The only 4Runner Ive driven to date was a 15 SR5 Premium, and I fell in love with the seating position.
I dont care about the Navigation... ideally Id install a CarPlay radio in the thing and use my phone. Ive always been against buying a "Premium" radio setup as they are usually junk- except for the Fender system in our GTI, sounds incredible.
The sunroof on my wife's Corolla rusted out after a few years. Toyota fixed it, but idk if I want to deal with that.
The "pleather" sounds like it would handle the dogs, and would probably be a better option then cloth for a vomit machine in the back.
My Tacoma was planned to be the car I kept forever, thats not going to happen obviously so I dont want to not purchase something I might regret later on. Im seeing the OffRoad for around 36k, and the Premium with KDSS for 40. Thats more then I really wanted to spend.

Main reason is that I don't like sunroofs. For me, living in AZ, it always seems too hot to have it open, or uncovered. I have dark hair and my head feels hot in the sun. Or maybe I'm just crazy! I do love the rest of the Premium package content; love the turn signal mirrors! I have the upgraded audio option, not suffering there.
They are all awesome... It's like choosing which Victoria's Secret model is the "best". Not that I need to worry about choices like that!

Your correct. Also looks like you can get KDSS without the Sunroof.

My TRD ORP has KDSS and no sunroof.
I prefer the head room over a sunroof, especially when bouncing around off road... :bounce:

Unless you bargain hard on the standard...
I bargained real hard on the Off Road. Couldn't justify the pricing on the ORP. Sure, I like the sunroof. Not much of a fan of the softex. Heated seats I plan to add on my own with factory style switches.
I think once you haggle on the standard OR, the price is much better than buying a premium. I don't regret my standard model purchase.

To my memory, the Premium package boiled down to:
Softex seats with heated fronts
Sunroof
Everything else was identical to the non-Premium:
KDSS is a separate option
Nav operated identical IMO between the two
Same radio and speaker system, and both XM-enabled

That's what I thought but wasn't sure. All I know is that when I was looking, I didn't feel like I was missing anything by getting the standard TE.

Honestly I think the seat adjust-ability might be the winner for me. Ive got back issues and the SR5 Premium I test drove was incredible over my Tacoma. Ive never been 100% comfortable in the Taco.
Im not sold on the KDSS - would it cause an issue if I lifted it?
Only mods Im interested in are basic lift (like the TRD PRO), TRD PRO Grille, and the wheels. I doubt Ill ever go offroading, but Ive found myself needing a locker before at our property - hence why not looking at the SR5.

Kdss adds great handling for a tall vehicle. We have two OR Premiums. Both no sunroof. Skipping the sunroof lowers inventory options. Many come with it. It's about 3" of extra headroom skipping the sunroof. No leaks, no rattles, no weird glass breakage. Navigation works OK. The premium seats are very comfortable and the heat is nice too. Seats are easy to clean. Be sure to shop around. Some dealers have better prices than others.
I tried to buy used. 40k mile rigs were the same as new. Used made no sense for me. Upgraded floor mats, nerf bars (running boards) are alot cheaper on Amazon. This goes for factory Toyota gear also.

I test drove the SR5 Pr, TRD OR PR, and limited, eventually I found out I like the TRD OR PR the most.Looked specifically for a standard OR and had to purchase out of state to find one. Same reasons as you... Dogs that puncture the fake leather in our Camry (as well as the real leather in our other 2 cars) and no want/need for a sunroof. Fwiw the clothe seats with cheapo canvas seat covers were surprisingly fine without seat warmers despite the -15F temps the last few weeks.
