Off Road Trailers Thread

I have been eyeing off road trailers for a while. Although I'm not ready to pull the trigger just yet, I would like to get one perspective from anyone who owns one of these.

There's a few out there but here are some that I have found through IG and the web.

My needs and use case -

Family of four, would like to have storage for fire wood and extra family accessories, bikes, etc.. Cooking space is not necessary but nice to have, mostly need a solid frame, space to store miscellaneous and a rack for an RTT. Nothing fancy, but I can't seem to find that for a reasonable price, so i may just go big.

What would be your ideal budget? Honestly those Patriot and Turtleback ones are ridiculously overpriced. As are those X-Venture ones. I'd check out Expo for trailer threads and also the USED section. Seems like people buy them and then find them more cumbersome than expected and take the loss on them. If you're looking for something simple that you could build up over time I'd recommend a Ruger Trailer. Get them to put a timbren axle-less suspension upgrade on it too for a better ride. Then add a tongue box, electrical, propane and kitchen system as you go along. That with an iKamper RTT would be a great trailer/tent setup that doesn't cost $30k.

[MENTION=75328]DannyLlama[/MENTION] I’ve been looking at them for awhile now, been to several shows and saw at least 20 different ones. I liked the chaser from AToverland, it’s not on their site listing anymore but they’ve posted that they are still available. Xventure looks great, but pricy with that new slide out kitchen. I think we decided to hold off for now, I just struggle with the idea of hauling a trailer everywhere. Those CVT are a good price point as you could add things as needed. I agree with others about turtleback being pretty pricey. I’ve looked at the ITWoverland which is sort of a tear drop, for the cost I think you get a lot. IN the end I think I’m going to try and get more efficient and make the kids keep the dog on the second row and try to add more to my rear bumper, will see if I can make that work.

I agree with everyone about them being too pricey. It's ridiculous and don't know how they stay in business selling trailers at price point of a new camry.

I have hunted all over craigslist and offer up, the forums to try to find something that's half OK and haven't been successful. I might have better luck hitting up the expos or just paying someone to build one, but that won't have a warranty..

I’ve got a cbi without swingout, have looked at getting a new bumper with swingout from all manufacturers. I’m in a similar situation as we are busting at the seams and with a 4 person rtt the roof space is gone. Plus we just got a golden retriever puppy! I’ve researched but haven’t decided what route to go, trailer or more bumper space. Based on what you describe you should look at these.

Comfortably sleeps two inside but can also have a rooftop tent. Seems to be priced right as well.

I bought one of these, and am getting delivery of it in January. Happier Camper HC1.

Very different from the others posted here. Some pros are:

-Sleeps 4, unlike most teardrop-style off road trailers. I have a kid, so could not do a 2-person set up.

-Super lightweight fiberglass (about 1500 lbs unloaded) which means you can haul anywhere. Way lighter than any other camper of similar size on the market.

-Modular inside means you can empty all the interior and fill with gear, dirt bike, toys, etc. if you want.

-Has lifted option with A/T tires, and options for off-grid solar inverter, A/C etc.

The cons are:

-Not nearly as rugged as many of the all-steel off-road trailers out there. Good luck pulling this down a really narrow trail, as it is 7' wide.

-No way to make this work with a roof-top tent -- you are going to be sleeping inside this trailer.

-It's expensive, starting around $25k and going way up with options from there.

-They have an insane waiting list on new orders. I waited around 1.5 years.

I second the V-Series from Runaway Campers. These are nice & priced under $10k loaded. I have the 6x8 Range Runner w/ a lot of the Offroad goodies that the V-Series has mins the 35’s & Timbren Independent suspension. I had them flip the axle for me & im adding some factory 4Runner 17’s & RidgeRunners to match my rig.

The owner and his wife for the below Teardrop trailer company were at the Ozarks Overland Rally a few months ago. He was pulling his with a Tacoma but used a 4Runner in the past.

Prices are fantastic and he only requires a $500 down payment to get one built. Said he sells ever single trailer he builds.

I personally don't want to deal with a trailer off road. It makes everything more difficult. I could see parking it at a campsite and off roading. I'd worry someone would steel it though.

Watching Jason Koertge on youtube roll his trailer - just confirms my opinions. Could've easily rolled his 4Runner as well.

I laugh at Primal Outdoors on youtube, pulling a tiny OR trailer with his 8ft bed diesel Ford F250. Makes no sense at all.

I have a TCTeardrops 5x9 trailer, have had it for about 4 years now. Great product at a great price. Todd and Carol are excellent to work with. I've recently purchased a pair of 17" 4Runner wheels to match the truck and new spacers and will be swapping these to the trailer come the spring so the truck spare can work with the trailer as well.

I purchase a Hiker off road earlier this year. It’s got everything you need. Furnace,water heater,20 gallons of fresh water, inverter, solar(400watts) and 2 6volt deep cycles. I sold my M416 look alike I built out. I’ll get into the pros and cons later.

It’s a Hiker trailer. This is their extreme off-road model. Their prices are way better than most off-road trailers on the market. Don’t get me wrong, they can get very pricey if you start adding on a ton of options, but their base price is hard to beat.

Keeping an eye on this..

I want a trailer, but not a RTT, as I have a decent sized dog who has to sleep with her dad, and I need to have a spot to put my kayak.
Might be better to get one of the flat style with a kitchen, and just mount my kayak on that and sleep in the back of the 4Runner.

With the hiker trailer, I have transported kayaks with no issues. My wife and I sleep in side with the smaller German Shepherd, not sure what we are going to do now. We have added a second And he’s big. Galley is in the back and with some drawers I added everything is very convenient..

I have a home built, but I highly recommend the HEO trailers. Jeff is local and builds among the best at a great price.
