off roading in socal 2wd

ya, its good for a 4x4 we take our f350 turbo diesel up there on the weekends to pull the dumb as*es out with 2wd that get stuck to make $$$ thats how i bought my new lift

Correct. They turn you around unless you have 4x4. The entrance to the OHV area is a water crossing where you'd get stuck unless you have 4x4.

Speaking of Saddle Back, I went up there in late November and it's fun. Quick question though; is there a way to know if the gate at the bottom is open? Not sure that makes sense, I'm a newbie to So Cal. Anyhow, the group I went with wasn't sure if it would be open or closed so we went out HWY 74 only to run into somebody at the top who had come up through the canyon. Just curious...

I'm not sure. I believe any time it rains they lock the gate.

...but I'm not sure how often it actually gets updated.

Also, there is a phone number on that site that you can call. That's what I did before my last trip up to the peak via Maple Springs Road.
