Off-Roading

How is the 4runner with off-roading compared to similar vehicles in its class such as a Jeep or something similar? Is there anything that should be done to prepare it for calm off-roading?

If I have a tow package, and someone gets stuck, could i pull them out of the mud or wherever (like if they are in a Jeep or something).

As far as suspension goes my runner is stock, stock and stock and I've done some stuff that would scare the piss out of guys in jeeps. The runner is an awesome off-roader. If you want to put some money into it, go ahead, but if you're doing nothing but calm trails, just make sure you got some 265's and you're golden

Thanks! I'd like to buy one, and get into some small casual off roading, nothing major. I've heard 4runners are great off road but wanted to make sure.

While we're on the topic, how does the 2WD version hold up off-road? Obviously I'm not expecting to whip it around in the snow and do any hill climbs but provided you get some 265's or something bigger, what are the off-road capabilities of the 2WD?

with my km2s im completly inpressed at waht my t4r would do in 2wd. tires make a huge diffrence

If you are referring to like a Jeep Wrangler then no, I would get the crap kicked out of me if my neighbor took his 89 yj out on the trails with me. Its got mad ground clearance and crazy low gears.

I would say it 100% depends on the driver. I have out wheeled jeep wranglers and I have been out wheeled buy wranglers. If you know how to drive offroad there's very little that will stand in your way. Of coarse having a solid front axle will do better but in my opinion I would rather have reliabilty and something that handles and drives really well on road as well as off. Jeep break down, they handle like piss on dry pavement and they're ugly. So you might get 20 feet further down the trail with a jeep than you would with a runner, big deal. At least I don't have to have my heads rebuilt every 50k miles.

you need to learn how to drive boy lol, especially if you want to come out to CO this summer. Ric CSL and I kept up with 2 jeeps with 6" lift and 34"M/T's a couple weekends ago. As a matter of fact if they hadnt dug into the snow so deep i could of gotten through where they got stuck.

Haha, I never get to drive off road. My only experience in the off road category is in deep snow but thats about it. Ain't many places to off road in St. Louis Just comparing the jeep to my car, it has more ground clearance, a shorter wheel base, slightly bigger tires, and a mean 4wd system. I've never driven side by side w/ him anywhere so I can't say for a fact that he would out do me but I would probably get my rear whooped off road by him. I would LOVE to get up to Colorado this summer and do some wheelin, that sounds like major fun!!! You guys may have to teach me how to drive off road though, lol

Come on, this discussion is getting out of hand! First, Jeep Wrangler is really not in 4runner's class. And yes, a Jeep Wrangler, esp. Rubicon edition, will kick the crap out of ANY comparably equipped 4runner, bar none. Hell, a Rubicon SWB (short wheelbase) will beat my G-wagen over the roughest terrain.

The aftermarket support and the available off-road stuff for Jeeps are unrivaled. The nice thing about the Jeep is that if a stock part is weak, then there are plenty of aftermarket stuff to replace it with.

If you ever have a chance, go to a local junk yard, one that takes every kind of vehilce (not jeep or toyota specialty yards) and count how many jeeps and how many toyotas there are. When I went to a u-pull-it to get my ford electric fan, I thought that maybe a camry one would work better. Well when I first walked in I saw about 20 jeeps all lined up right at the front gate, and well... they didnt even have a toyota section cause, there were no toyotas. Ive been to just about every junk yard in the Denver metro area and I have never found a toyota in a junk yark unless it was an early 80's or it had been rolled several times.

I agree 110% about Jeeps being terribly unreliable, but that doesn't make them any less capable off road. I'm still pretty firm on my assumption that a Jeep Wrangler would whoop my ass off road. I'd have to drive right next to one off road to be sure though.

Depending on the terrain, the IFS in it's entirety could be seen as weak parts. Jeeps D30 and D35 are nothing to write home about but I guarantee the axle shafts hold up better than our CV shafts, and I wouldn't be near as worried about locking one as I would my IFS diff.

Thai is right but it also depends on the terrain and the type of offroading. The new Jeeps are built a good bit bigger than the older ones and I agree that they are not even in the same class. But around here I would take my stock (if it was still stock) 98 4Runner over a 98 Jeep anything because the advantages that I have in ground clearance, locker, and gearing outweigh the advantages of a Jeep with the shorter wheelbase and SFA. On the same trail with the same driver the Jeep would most likely prevail 9 times out of 10, but for all around daily driving I would still take a 4Runner.

this is sooo crazy, you can take a 99 4runner vs. a 99 Cherokee Compair apples to APPLES,, both being bone STOCK, same driver, same obsticle, IMHO the toyota will do better.
I just got my 04, I could have bought a jeep, I could have bought a ford, chevy, nissan, benz, I could have got anything, I choose a 4Runner.

DRIVER does make a world of difference PERIOD

Aftermarket: Jeep wins. there are just to many Co.s making stuff for jeeps.
Reliablity: no question, Toyota
Dependablity: again Toyota
Resale Value: again Toyota

As far as the solid axle, well Im not buying it, Ive wheeled just about every weekend for the last 4 years, Ive never "needed" a solid axle, Ive been on trails, got the videos somewhere, where guys are sayinb "hey, thats a solid axle line" and I drove right up and over... point being pick your line RIGHT, follow your spotter, and know your rig, IFS will go just about anywhere :bigok:
