Off-Roading

I just want you to think about that for a second........You dont have to replace weak parts on a toyota, cause there are no weak parts :bigok:

Im not saying that Toyotas are more capable than Jeeps. Im still sticking firm to that it all depends on the driver.

No weak parts?? That is kinda of a stretch statement, don't you think?

Hmm, you may want to dissect a Jeep Rubicon and compare part by part to your 4runner...you are going to be hard press to find a part of importance in off-roading that favors the 4runner. I challenge you! :)

As for driver, of course, if you have a novice and an expert, then it depends on the driver. However, this is NOT what we are talking about here. We are talking about OFF-ROAD CAPABILITY of a VEHICLE. The original poster did NOT mention anything about DAILY driving nor on-road performance.

Thus, i stand by my original statement. Now, if we were to compare a Jeep Grand Cherokee to a 4runner, then i am all for the 4runner 100%. But, when you guys bring in the Wrangler (which has VERY high resale value and has a pretty good reliability record!), you guys are stretching a little bit, esp. in the off-road department. (BTW, someone here recently showed that a Jeep Wrangler actually holds it's resale value BETTER than a 4runner!)

(sorry to quote you Thai) a Rubicon is not even in the same class as a 4runner,, hell why not compair our 4runners with a VW ??

people have to COMPAIR APPLES TO APPLES...
my 4runner is soooooo much fast than a ten speed :D

I guess when the original poster was asking about the 4Runner's offroad ability vs. Jeeps I assumed he wasn't trying to decide between a 3rd. gen 4Runner and Jeep Rubicon. Again, I would take a stock 1998 4Runner over a stock 1998 GC, Cherokee, or Wrangler. In other parts of the country that may change, but around here the solid axle just becomes a lot less important. I'd still take a new 4Runner over a Jeep Rubi, but not because I think the 4Runner is more capable, I just don't buy Chrysler... :bigok:

Resale Value: again Toyota

As far as the solid axle, well Im not buying it, Ive wheeled just about every weekend for the last 4 years, Ive never "needed" a solid axle, Ive been on trails, got the videos somewhere, where guys are sayinb "hey, thats a solid axle line" and I drove right up and over... point being pick your line RIGHT, follow your spotter, and know your rig, IFS will go just about anywhere :bigok:

Resale value...depend on Jeep vehicle you're talking about...check your local ads for a Wrangler and compare it's depreciation...it may surprise you!

For pure off-roading purposes, a solid axle is better than IFS in almost everyway. It is significantly stronger. You can add a locker to it and have less fear of it breaking. Ground clearance is static...does not change with terrain, unlke IFS. Live axle articulates more...and more effectively puts a tire to the ground (thus, more traction) over an uneven surface.

As i said above, the Wrangler is in a different class than 4runner. However, since the previous posters mentioned the Wrangler, i thought that i should bring up some facts to defend it.

Haha I agree. Ok heres my thing. This is a 4RUNNER website and a lot of people here are defending jeeps more than they are their own damn vehicles. WHATS WRONG WITH YOU. Im just trying to keep everyones spirits high about the 4runner. And I will take a challenge this summer. If anyone here can find me someone with a rubicon (stock) I will do an offroad callenge with them. And I will put money on the fact that there is nowhere that piece of crap Jeep can go that I can't follow. C'mon this is coming from the guy thats building his 4runner for speed not for offroading. Ric's the only one that has my back right now  Oh and thai as for off road parts that a 3rd gen runner has over a rubicon. Locking rear differential.

not sure what texas is like, but here in colorado, you cant give a jeep away, yet you will be hard pressed to find a 3rd gen for sale, yes, there are 3rd gens for sale, but talk about pricey, lol
I do have a buddy that bought a jeep, wheeled it twice, said he hated it, put it on autotrader and craigslist, took 8 months to sell, it for $1000 less than he paid, sure thats only one case, but yea, you can find any used jeeps out here, anyday, all day long, not many 3rd gens.
you should come out here, Ill be more than happy to show ya just want a IFS rig can do :bigok:
Ive had sooo many people tell me that they didnt think an IFS could make this or that, its all about the driver, spotter and line you choose...
Ive proven that time and time again...

:iagree: on everything above! Its funny cause you can go up and have a bunch of fun even do some semi serious climbs and still drive the runner back home. Jeeps are pretty good and all if its not gonna be your daily driver Things do seem to break on them a lot. And how bout those new ugly 4 door wranglers blehh!! Ive been in some very sticky situations where i was going to go do some minor stuff but ended up in some " oh crap am i gonna be walking home?" and every time so far the Runner has broght me home and continues to be a daily driver.

1.) Ric admitted that the Rubicon is better than 4Runner and they are not even in the same class

2.) I'm defending Toyota. I hate Jeep. But facts are facts my friend.

3.) You won't believe me, but a Rubicon would leave you VERY far behind on a trail.

4.) Rubi's have front AND rear lockers...

3.) Im not gonna say either way, thats why ill take a callenge. Im curious to see what would happen.

4.) well I'll just go ahead and put my foot in my mouth.

As you may know, i started this site a while back for the 4runner enthusiast. However, i am also against blind enthusiasm! I am a car lover...i try to see the good in every vehicle. No vehicle is perfect for every circumstance.

Oh, BTW, you need to read up on the Rubicon...you may not want to challenge it after reading it!! :D Hint: Rubicon has a LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL in the front AND rear axles...yup, full locking differentials all around. :)

I did ????? when ? where ? I said they are not in the same class.

look on ebay and see how many more jeeps there are that say, "need work" or have no front drive shafts or broken 4wd. there are ZERO 4runners that say that.

the only thing i have to say defending jeeps is they have many more years of experience, if you look up jeep in the dictionary it says, "a four-wheel drive vehicle used to carry soldiers and equipent throught the battle field during WWII."

Defending toyota: i play a game with myself while driving, its "would you rather have that car than this 4runner?" since my 4runner being basically stock, i've never looked a stock jeep and thought, hmm i'd probably be happier in that. i've also never heard any quotes of jeepers making fun of 4runner drivers, its always the other way around.
and for the final statement making 4runner better than jeeps, or any SUV that you could think was better, go to edmunds and do car reviews on 4runners and compare them to any other 4wd out there, the 4runner gets a better review 90% of the time.

I dont care, thats what separates the men from the boys. Let that jeep have locking front and rear, Ill still takem. My optimism and self confidence has always been what brings me out of a fight on top. lemme at em, lemme at em. :p

Sorry Ric you are correct. I misinterpreted your post. I knew you had said they were not in the same class. Reading that I assumed you were saying that the Rubi would be more capable offroad, but that wasn't really comparing apples to apples anyways. My bad.

I have wheeled with them, one guy got pissed that my 99 4runner with only ONE locker went everywhere he did, and did it smoother and easier, infact, he was calling a lair, and was ready to fight, yes, he was ready to actually fist fight me cause the 4runner was stock at the time, and he couldnt belive that I did everything he did, if it wasnt for his friend (in a 4runner) that calmed him down, we would have thrown punches, calling me a lair, lol
ITS THE DRIVER, when will people get it ???

having all the tools, but NOT knowing how to use them, makes them useless, so whats the point ?
Ive seen guys in jeeps with just a limited slip and a stick go EVERYWHERE i did, and not slip or spin, making everything like like a walk in the park, awesome driver

we can discuss this untill we die, lol everyone will believe what they want, even when they see something with thier own eyes, they will still believe what they want :bigok: Im done
