If you recently replaced the front, I think it's possible your rear 02 is no longer reading in a close enough range to the front one--thus resulting in your code.

Could be that your cat is going bad, but I disagree with the kid--I think it could be your sensor.

You could try testing it first.
 
Front has not been replaced by me nor the PO recently (I have all of his receipts). The rear sensor is a $50 part - not gonna break my bank and certainly cheaper than new cat. Emissions testing in my part of GA will require that I solve this problem correctly - not sure if an aftermarket cat and URD dummy would work here. A majority of the threads I've read points to the rear sensor being the culprit.
 
the rear sensor does nothing, the front sensor will affect how the vehicle runs, ie lean out or richen the mixture, play with timing ect. the rear sensor just tells you if the cat is working or not, replacing that with out fixing the problem will probably not do a thing, and eventually you will burn out your new o2 sensor. this is what i have read both on here and yotatech as well as heard from several toyota techs.

Bad cat is #4 on the 4-item list. How do I test the cat itself?
 
I've read that the 0420 code is fixed by changing the downstream sensor and 0430 is fixed by replacing the upstream sensor. It's kind of opposite of how you think it would work.

Are both O2 sensors not the same?
 
im not sure, but i know how to test the O2 super easy, at least if you have a friend with a runner. swap o2s and run them for a day, who ever throws the code... bing! so if you swab with "joe" and he throws a code, its the o2 that is bad(imo highly unlikely but i have been wrong before), and if you throw the code, its your cat, or something else in your truck.... id suggest making a new thread on this and seeing what some of the other guys who know codes better than me and are more experienced with trouble shooting, to see if they can help too basically if im wrong and your right sorry, but if im right and your wrong, i dont want to see you or anyone else here waste $50+ on a part they didnt need. $50, thats a tank of fuel....

thanks we will look into that. it justs sucks so bad because our sons best friend is his dog. they do everything together, he wont even sleep in his own bed, he gets up as soon as we go to bed and goes over and gets in the dogs bed and sleeps with him... they play together all the time...

Not on my 2002 Cali Emissions truck. Front is Denso # 234-9002 and Rear is Denso # 234-4261.

I just ordered the rear sensor from Amazon so I can have it in hand on Friday. If I don't need it, I will return it, but in the meantime, I'll go to a muffler shop to have the cat tested I guess.

Speaking of scanners, can anyone recommend a cheap OBDII scanner? There's hundreds of them - all ranging from $20 to well over $200.
 
Sprayed the rear sensor with a healthy dose of WD-40 last night after I parked her. Jiggled the wires around in the process. CEL went off today after I got back in from breakfast. Scanner and 02 sensor should be here today, still thinking its a sensor problem.

kid: Yeah that does suck. If he isn't having serious issues with the dog or anything else he is alergic to then I would just keep letting him do what he wants until his symptoms go away or get serioius enough to worry about.. thats probably what I would do .. just carry an eppi pen and benadryl.
 
oh im not getting rid of my dog! oh hell no. we use benadryl on him but it only works for the first two or three days then its effectiveness is lost on the rash, and they just sort of sit at a "stalemate"...
 
Doh! Amazon sent the wrong 02 sensor (I ordered the correct part #).

Just saw this reply on TacomaWorld. It was in response to a question on what happens when you turn the 4wd switch to 4H or 4L. I thought it was a pretty awesome answer.

^Anyone else notice this thread was deleted? Anyone know the outcome? Did dude tell us an incomplete story or did the vendor make good?
