The comparison between the 4runner and Raptor has become a popular topic in just about every thread now. In some cases, derailing a thread and rustling up some jimmies (I happen to find it very entertaining). How about we discuss it here? Feel free to discuss 4runner VS Raptor, 4Runner VS The World, Tacoma VS ZR2, etc. :tea:

No comparison, if the Raptor were a little cheaper I'd have one in the garage now instead of the 4Runner. I love my 4Runner and think it's an all around great truck and will suit my needs well, there's just something not as cool compared to a Raptor. However, since I added all the Pro stuff, I seem to stand out more than Raptors because you see 15 of those a day where I'm from.

my first choice was a raptor. i've been trying to convince the wife to let me get one. after 2 years, the answer is still a no lol she does not want a pickup unless we own an SUV first. so 4runner it is. now if only i can win that damn lotto, then we can have both.

Full size, extra wide pickup truck down off road trails? No thanks.

I'm well aware it'd do it, and I'd totally love to have a Raptor, but not for what I'm doing right now.

Sounds like I missed out on some ever-so-frequent T4R shenanigans. How about we leave the trivial things behind and step it up a notch to 4Runner vs Apache helicopter..

First, as I've said elsewhere...... f**k Ford, for my own personal reasons. Yes I'm biased.

That said....
As I've also said elsewhere (Lawndart), the 4Runner is more like a Swiss Army Knife. No, it's not as nice as your kitchen can opener, but it does the job. And other jobs too. It's a true SUV.... sport UTILITY vehicle. It may not excel at any one thing, but it can passably do many things.

The Raptor... as much as I hate Ford... is built/engineered for a specific audience, and they nailed that (for an off the showroom product). I'll agree with Lawndart that TRD is not what it used to be/mean. I'll say that's true across ALL manufacturers. All of their "off road" packages are meh.

Ford FX4 - Raptor is not part of that series, which was touted as their "off road" package for ages. The FX4's are meh.

Chevy Z71 - The new Colorado ZR2 is definitely a step above, and in the direction of the Raptor. The Z71 trucks though are meh.

Toyota TRD - Not what it used to be. FFS.... P-rated tires on a TRD Off Road? Wake up Toyota! Not even going to discuss the Land Cruiser (R.I.P.)

Jeep - Rubicon is still pretty capable out the gate. It's also the LAST offering they have. The Grand Cherokee is NOT suitable (dual independent suspension that other have tried to do lift on... it IS a no go).

Nissan - Has damn near thrown in the towel. Xterra is gone. And the Pro-4X is on the same level as the FX4, TRD, Z71 packages. (Side note: the overseas Patrol is sweet.... too bad we get a POS version)

Mazda, Mitsubishi, and many others have nothing to offer any more. Period.

Land Rover - Good bye Defender. And if you're buying a new LR4 or whatnot for off-roading, I can maybe recommend a good psychiatrist....

Mercedes G - Lololololololololololololol. If you're buying this, you could have bought a 4Runner AND Raptor, dummy.

Long story short....
I can understand the excitement over the Raptor. Ford actually listened to some of their customers. Chevy ... to be seen. But overall, there is a lack of good options these days. Which is shocking considering how popular overlanding has become, in my opinion.

So, to Ford, I give you guys a reluctant salute for doing a fine job building something that some of us can truly drool over.

As to the rest..... step up your game.

Having owned a Raptor AND a 4Runner at the same time (sold the Raptor for an M3), I'll give my 2cents:

Looks: The Raptor crew cab is an absolute monster in terms of size, especially if you are not used to driving/parking any kind of pickup trucks. Raptor guys will tell you "park anywhere", but it takes some practice to know that you have to plan your parking strategy ahead of time before entering any lot.

You're dealing with a tremendous amount of width (over even the normal F150), much more length than you're used to, and for even those with lifts - the height of the Raptor is noticeably tall.

Performance: My data is skewed towards the 1st gen (mine was a 2014), but my Raptor drove like a beast. It was nice and cushy when you wanted it to be, while being just rough enough to remind you that you are in an F150. The faster you went over bumps, the more forgiving the suspension was. Though I was not one of those *******s who would take his neighborhood speedbump at 80mph, I did often think about it haha. The truck begged you to go fast, and the handling (likely due to the width and suspension) was 5x better than my 4th gen with Bilsteins, etc.

Storage: It's a truck with a crew cab. The rear seats fold upwards, revealing a huge bed of empty space in the backseat. i used to just throw my whole dog bed back there (it was big) and my pup had more than enough room to chill in or out of the bed. It was like a small apartment back there, and then you had the added space of the actual truck bed. Overall for a nice, long trip (and I took many it it), I was never wanting for storage space.

I freaking loved my Raptor, one of the only reasons I sold it was because it's not really conducive to living in narrow, sheltered, broken streets of CT and NYC. Parking structures are outdated and therefore all have low ceilings, narrow parking spots, and old people waiting to ding your doors. I could barely fit it in my home garage, and couldn't go below the 2nd level of my work garage. While most of this I could have lived with, the true torture was not being close enough to anywhere the truck could properly stretch its legs. In otherwords I never got to use it for what it was meant to be used for, and that is the truest of crimes in itself.

Will definitely own another Raptor one day, but I need to live out west.

If you want to compare it to a 4Runner, I have one big thing the 4Runner trumps the raptor in: Convenience.
The 4Runner is a smaller-ish, tighter (no big fender flares or long bed in back) package that can literally go ANYWHERE, and do almost anything. It has more than ample STOCK storage space with the flat folding seats, and for those with roof racks the sky is the limit in terms of how much you want to load it up. It's really the swiss army knife of SUVs, and I think they are 2 vehicles that cannot really be compared.

Yes the 4Runner is slower. It is smaller. It requires extensive modifications for big tires. But it gives you a package you can use any day, anywhere, in any conditions. And unlike the Raptor, you don't have to plan out your parking spot before you even hit the lot!!

There's TWO threads where this came up.

1. My thread, because we pushed my truck to the absolute breaking point in what was ostensibly the Raptors' home turf.

2. The absolutely dumb as shit supercharger thread, aka destroyer of Mods, or how I learned to stop worrying and think people are dipshits. Because it pertained to the idea of value and how much power could realistically be eked out of a platform never designed for performance.

Here's the rub, the 4Runner isn't cheap, and Toyota has slapped the TRD name now on two of its trim lines with the TRD PRO and TRD OFF ROAD (shudders) while not offering anything in line with what could be considered 'racing.'

Why the Raptor, or even the Chevy ZR2, come into the debate is that the jump from a 3.5L light truck to an absolutely bat shit nuts race truck can't be ignored:

Moreover the thing to keep in mind is that at a certain point if you have to dump 8K in a super charger into your truck, add a bunch of aftermarket suspension, and thus attack the reliability of a stock vehicle...maybe more expensive stock vehicle in question isn't a bad value at all (i.e Raptor).

The only people who seem to get their feathers ruffled here are those that think adding all this shit to a vehicle makes it better than a vehicle that from the factory is tuned to go faster, have a better gearbox, electronics suite, etc.

I've done more mods to my truck than some of you guys ever will, and even I'm sitting here taking a breather, and thinking really hard about what I expect back out of the platform I've essentially doubled the cost on.

Precisely why I made this thread. The modified car VS more expensive factory car topic happens in EVERY automotive forum. Including the guy (in this case you're that guy) who pushes the platform to the limit. However, it's rare when the guy spends all of that money, blood, sweat, and tears, and can still recognize the shortcomings of the platform, or can admit that the grass may be greener on the other side.

Good luck with your current and future builds, and feel free to direct people this way:rockon:

Edit: I just want to add that everyone has different needs, too. Some people think that they "need" a rig like yours. Others understand that the 4Runner is plenty capable for their off road needs, in stock form. #moddingforthegram

I'd 100% own a Raptor if they were anyone even close to being in the same ballpark price range.

Unfortunately, that extra 25-30K, is quite the difference. Shit, you can almost buy two 4Runners for the price of a Raptor.

2015 toyota 4runner trd pro – the raptor of suvs? [first drive review]

2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro - The Raptor of SUVs? [First Drive Review] - The Fast Lane Car

The lifted suspension, inferno paint with black accents on the 2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro prototype speak loudly to the adventurous off-roader, but the modified suspension also make for a mighty comfortable ride on the pavement. Can the 2015 4Runner TRD Pro be the Raptor of SUVs?

The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is a full-size toy truck for bashing deserts and going off-road, while also offering a supple on-road experience. This off-road focused version of the 4Runner follows suit. The standard 4Runner is already one of the most capable off-road SUVs. It’s no crossover, as it continues to use a frame as its foundation. It has a sophisticated 4WD system with several adjustments.
