Glad I found this

I couldn't sleep so started poking around the forum. I just joined 3 months ago after I purchased my 5th gen. and usually spend my time over in the 5th gen section.

Anyway, I'll have to go back through the threads on here.

I am 45 and got back into lifting this year. I had shoulder surgery a couple years ago and it has been tough getting back into it. I am 5'11 and currently go 220#'s. I have been trying to cut body fat %. I had ballooned up to 238 after my surgery and had to do something about it. It's definitely challenging to make gains in your 40's.

I am currently on a routine below and spend about 1 -1.5 hours per day at the gym.
Day 1: Chest and Tri's --Barbell day
Day 2: Back and Bi's -- Barbell
Day 3: Legs and Shoulders --BarBell
Repeat above for 3 days using dumbells.

I use an app called Jefit and create my routine on my phone. It tracks all the exercises, reps, weight as well as body measurements and body weight. Gives you the ability to superset and has a timer. I usually try to only rest 30 seconds between sets unless I am doing Squats, deadlifts or lunges then I might go up to 1 minute.

My goal is to get to 200#'s. I got down to 214#'s and then stalled. This has happened to me twice now and it is frustrating.

Also, becoming like an old car is frustrating as well. From day to day you just don't know WTH ailment you are going to wake up with.

For supplements I take those in capsule form. I found the GNC pill stuff just doesn't absorb very well. One thing I think that has helped me with soreness and joint pain has been fish oil. I used to take the pill form but found that the oil in a shot glass goes down much better with no fishy taste or after taste.

I'll be interested to see how that fat burner works out.

Did leg this morning, i need to lift in the morning more often there was nobody at the gym i freaking love that.
Anyway
Back squat
Front squat
sumo deadlift
regular deadlift
quad extension

i need to get a belt soon, lifting raw is taking a toll on my lower back and knees.

Don't go cheap on the belt if you get one - you'll regret it if you do. Love my 13mm Inzer forever belt. Highly recommend it.

Need a little advice here for those of you that do front squats, i have what you call T-rex arms, and when im doing front squat it is almost wrist breaking trying to do a clean grip, i've tried the strap trick but it's so unstable that i don't feel safe doing it. any tips?

Hey guys, just stumbled onto this thread, usually stuck in the 3rd gen forum. I've been a gym rat for 10 years or so, have gone through many phases, sizes, routines, diets. Right now I'm a hard core disciple of Mike Dolce and The Dolce Diet, and I believe I will closely follow it for the rest of my life. I've taken all the crap from GNC, it made me strong.... and fat and sluggish. It also made me pee hot blood once, so I don't eat powder and pills anymore. I try to eat only things that are in the state that mother nature intended for them to be eaten. I do lots of cardio, lots of deadlifts, lots of pullups/pushups, and some olympic lifts. I ride motocross and mountain bikes so I don't want to be fat or bulky, so I focus on being lean and strong. I do 3 week rotations with my workouts, 3 weeks of hard core strength with some cardio, and then 3 weeks of hard core cardio and some strength, usually 5-6 days/week split up depending on which is the focus of that cycle. Goes something like this:

strength:
deadlift workout with 30 min cardio/sprints warmup
day 1 - push workout
day 2 - pull workout/30 minutes bicycle warmup
day 3 - rest
day 4 - repeat (mix in some mountain bike/motocross in there)

cardio:
day 1 - Sprints or moutain bike/motocross
day 2 - full body strength/olympic lifts
day 3 - long run (4-10 miles)
day 4 - rest
repeat

Cool man!

I tried to start again Sunday. It did not go well. Was at the bottom of a light squat set and pain set in. Back to the drawing board, I guess. I think I'm just going to have to cut squats or do extremely light sets with 135 or something.

Sucks to go from squatting a good amount of weight to this, but whatever. Need to go back to my physical therapist for the 3 days in a row treatment. That was highly effective before, but I haven't been able to do it in quite a while.

I know friends don't let friends skip leg days, but you might have to skip. just do upper body, when you back gets better you can just do legs all day everyday.

I probably will either cut squats all the way for a while or reduce the weight a lot and increase the reps. The way I look at, it's all part of the game.

I will squat 500 again. You can count on it!

Great Thread!

Hey guys, I just came across this thread and I love it!

I'm somewhat of a gym rat-I've been lifting for about 25 years.
At 44, no more heavy lifting for me, there's no glory in it. When I was in my 20's, it was about heavy movements and lifts.
Now, it's just get in a workout, cardio and be healthy.

The only supplements I take are protein and vitamin C and flax seed capsules, really not much else. I do add a post-workout carb drink/powder
on occasions, but I really want to get leaner.

Anyway, I'm going to follow this thread. I wish everyone luck with their goals!

Yup... Pretty sure I tore my pec today... Did 3 sets of 8 on flat bench with 285lbs with no real problems... Went for the 4th set and felt good until like the 5th rep when out of nowhere my chest started feeling like something was gurgling in it and started popping and it completely gave out... Luckily I had a friend there

That use to happen to me when i do the same number of reps for each set, now i do 5 sets, and start from 10 i go to 8, 6, 4 and 4. same number of reps as 4 sets of 8 but i save my muscle and joints.

I've done many different reps and sets and always change it up... This isn't the first time I've done this but it may be the worst...

When i ripped mine i was going way below parallel and tried to use my chest to bump the bar, now i just do 45 degrees nice and slow.
