Official: Gym/Workout Thread

one step at a time man, just to make you feel better i messed up bad yesterday, im talking about beer pizza taco bell burger king, staright up ate 7000 calories. felt like crap today and 5 lbs heavier lol

haha I know how that goes. I used to do the same thing with Qdoba. My friends would just look at me like, "....are you trying to gain weight? two ancho chile burritos for lunch? thats like 2500 calories, easy."

man's gotta eat.

Can't remember if I've posted here. Am a member at a CrossFit box; however, this one's decent, as the owners know their stuff - one's got a medical degree, all are certified way above the basics, one's the local weightlifting coach @ the nearby high school, one's a physical fitness major, etc.

I was/am kind of their test, as I've had:

- L5/S1 herniated disc surgery
- 2 decompressions on my left shoulder
- 1 on my right
- bilateral carpal release surgeries on my left and right hands
- first dorsal tendon release on my left wrist
- and surgery on my left ankle to remove part of the ankle bone when I snapped it off

Despite that, here are my current totals:

The "Big 3":

- bench - 255#
- deadlift - 405#
- squat - 355#

Other lifts:

- clean & jerk - 205#
- static shoulder press - 185#
- push jerk - 245#

Not the best by far, but then again, given that I'm 37 with about 8 surgeries under my belt, my only REAL limitation is lifting insanely heavy on certain lifts so as to avoid exacerbating my herniated disc, so I'm happy with that. Not trying to be the best...just healthy. :)

I made a lifestyle change with exercise and dieting recently and it's funny how you can't go back to that old lifestyle. Your body won't let you. I was eating healthy for four weeks and grabbed chickfila in a rush and I felt lethargic and like crap for 3 hours until it came out the other end. Afterwards, I felt great again. Eating right will do wonders for you!

Thats awesome you are still getting in there and keeping active. With all those surgeries, keeping fit really is a lifesaver. We have a lot of joint injuries around where I live, knees, shoulders, back, you name it, so pretty much everyone I see is at some stage of rehab and PT. Always improving!

True true. :) Though to be honest, I don't like to call it 'rehab' as to be blunt, as the trainer says, "You may not be the quickest in the box, but you're beating 100% of those people who are sitting on their @$$ on the couch." LOL There are kids 1/2 my age who can't lift what I can, so it's not like I'm decrepit. I simply have to listen to my body when it tells me something, like "Back off, man." LOL

Torn miniscus has been keeping me out of the gym and BJJ classes..but I did compete in Modesto Highland games this last weekend..this pic is for you guys =)

Finally graduated High School!
Its summer time and you know what that means. Time to get back in shape. Drinking my pre-workout right now and going to hit the gym soon. Starting off with VERY low weights given that I havent lifted anything over 25 lbs in 5 months.

TTT

just got back in the gym bout a month ago. now this month I will start hitting it hard. my goal is to bulk up 20lbs of mass.

Can't believe everyone just quit going to the gym.
We need to put some life back into this thread!!!

Who's with me!!!!:couch2:

I'm holding steady at 6 months in the gym. I only go 3 days a week, but I definitely can see results and I feel better. Although I really need to mix up my routine. I was doing low weight/high reps, but I'm extremely bored of that now. I've been doing mid weight mid reps, so 3x15,12,10. I definitely like it better, but I need some new workouts. Anyone have a good full body 3 day workout?

Try for mid weight, high reps. I do 3 sets of 20 on everything, and the difference is huge. Much more cardio, pulse through the roof, and definitely noticeable gains.

Also, what keeps me from getting bored is more of a random lift schedule than a routine. Just wander around the gym in between sets, and hit a machine for a different muscle group instead of sitting there and taking a break. Keep that pulse elevated as much as possible throughout your entire session. Does wonders for building endurance.

I was doing the 20 rep thing for the past 6 months and got bored of it. I just get over doing all those reps. That's why I was trying to switch up to some mid rep sets. I also work out with a friend of mine and we always are doing two lift at once with no to very little downtime in between switching. It definitely is more my style and keeps my heart rate up like you mentioned. I am drenched in sweat after a workout. My friend keeps making fun of me because I'm sweating so much.

My workout today was:
1.25 mile run @ 8 min mile
Sitting Pulls to my chest (not sure the name, but its the close grip attachment) 3x20,15,12
Dips 3xmax
Cable Rope Pull Downs 3x20,15,12
Cable Straight Bar Curls 3x20x15x12
Incline Squat Machine (Laying on my back) 3x20
Usually we also do dumbell shoulder press 3x20, but I had to leave early.

We were in the gym for 40 min start to finish and 20-30 sec rest max between sets, but most of the time we instantly switched.

Tipped the scale

I tipped the scale last month at 238... Most I've weighed ever. I am 6 foot 1 inch, and 10 years ago weighted 150. I was a stick, bulked up, turned to fat, and now I am fat. Did Advocare this month. Down to 217. I can't believe it worked.

My buddy got me on it, and told me not to work out while on it. Now to work out. Here is what I don't get. One person says if you want to lose weight, you have to build lean muscle, which means heavy weight, lower reps. Then the other person says cardio kills fat, so lower weight, and higher reps.

Is this an age old fight? I figure run 3 times a week, lift heavy twice a week. I have p90x, but was not sold on it. I think for a reborn fitness guy, it is too hard to start with.

I was/is in the same boat as you goose. I was 230 (6' 1") at my heaviest this last winter and getting way too flabby. Ended up starting working out and I hover around 223, but I haven't changed my diet all that much. I know I need to, but just haven't yet. I would love to shed 20 pounds in one month, damn that is impressive, but I'd want to work out as well.

What's with the Advocare diet?
