Only places I hear of is an off-road park called Xtreme over in Crosby. And General Sam's in Huntsville. I hear it's all mud. Austin has Hidden Falls. Everything is so far for my liking. I wish I lived in the mountains like everyone else here lol.

I've been to xtreme and it's more mud trails and mud puddles but there are a few trails here and there inside. Hidden Falls is probably the closets off road park that has some technical trails. There is also Barnwell and Northwest OHV closer to DFW. You could also venture south and go to San Luis Pass (stay off the dunes) or PINS.
Houston gets the short end of the stick as you're probably only looking at sand or mud if you're looking to go off the pavement.

If you don't mind driving a few hours north there's Barnwell Mountain in Gilmer. We just wrapped up the Lone Star Toyota Jamboree out there this past weekend. 1,800 acres of trails, good camping and facilities with trails ranging from mild to wild. Good place for a weekend trip.

There are a ton of offroad areas in Texas. Unfortunately it is either extreme terrain that is mostly way beyond a 5th gen or just dirt roads and beaches on the coast or in the hill country/ big bend state or national park. Lone star jamoree in gilmer would have been a perfect intro... but you will need to wait until next year for that since it was just last weekend. Sam Houston state park has some dirt roads, and camping but nothing to really exercise the truck. Hidden falls is well worth the trip, but you will be mostly lost and confused without a group or guide.

Yeah, Spring Creek was pretty cool. I grew up in and went to college in Houston. Spring Creek and some areas of Barker Cypress before they actually built stuff there was fun. Now I live in Denver, so.....yeah, lots of trails. OP, my suggestion is move to Colorado :thumb:

As was said earlier, south Texas kinda sucks for off-road since spring creek closed. That place was a blast... and sorely missed.
Most of the off-road parks In the Houston area are more for ATV and built rigs. I grew up in Huntsville, gen sams is not where you wanna be with a 4Runner. You're liable to drop off in a hole that a set of 54's rutted out!
Crosby and splendora... there are areas, but you're gonna end up with a lot of South Texas pinstriping on your rig...

This thread makes me want to move lol. But Texas is home! Only seen snow once in my life (Houston back in the 90's) and I think it would be exciting to be on a trail with some snow. The views I'm sure would be awesome. No driving experience in snow though. Why I can only think it would be exciting for now lol.

Everything is good in that area! Take at least 2 spares and a tire repair kit. If you want a challenge, try and make it out to a remote camp site called Papalote De La Sierra. Park Rangers said my buddy and I were the only group to make the journey in 3 years. ( Pretty remote)
