Offroad vs Offroad Pro?

90+% of the posts on this forum are regarding cosmetic stuff and aftermarket add-ons. A small handful of people here actually do their own mechanic work beyond regular maintenance. Most have a dealer do their maintenance. So when I see some "build your vehicle software" for Toyota, I figured the cosmetic types here could quickly answer. I don't have time to play with that dealer software. Just show me side-by-side specs so I can quickly see the difference between the two vehicles. I'll get my answer(s) elsewhere.

I don’t understand any of your logic here, but side by side specs comparing any models you want are readily available on the Toyota website and would take less time to pull up yourself than posting a super basic question on an Internet forum.

So let me get this straight, you have the time to sift through and categorize every single post to arrive at the grand conclusion that "90+% of the posts on this forum are regarding cosmetic stuff and aftermarket add-ons." However, you don't have the time to "...play with that dealer software." Your term "that dealer software" could easily be translated to "navigating a website".

Then you finish with "I'll get my answer(s) elsewhere." which can again be trivially translated to...

"Due to your rude behavior, I shall retrieve my sporting-equipment, and return from whence I came."

Or, more commonly...

"I'm taking my ball and going home!"

As of 2017, when I bought my TRD Off Road.

And, presuming you mean "TRD Off Road Premium" rather than "TRD Pro". (Is that correct?)

Prior to 2017, the Premium came with a moonroof/sunroof thing. Not so in 2017.

Premium came only with black fake leather seats. There were many comments from people living in the Southwest parts of the US who said those seats got extremely hot in the sun. Indeed, a friend bought a Prius with those seats and although he was wearing a pair of thin hiking pants, got a "1rst degree" burn on his legs, which is basically like a sunburn. The regular TRD Off Road comes with fabric seats.

The Premium came with "puddle lights". I think it would be cool to have but.

The Premium also came with turn indicator lights on the mirrors, definitely a good feature IMHO.

I believe the Premium also had front driver and passenger power seats. The regular TRD Off Road had only front driver's side power seat.

That is the extent of it to my knowledge.

I chose the regular TRD Off Road because I did not want the fake leather seats. I sacrificed the other features. I thought I was losing the sunroof but in 2017 it wasn't standard on the Premium anyway.

I hope that helps. I don't know what might have changed in the last four years.

The TRD Pro, that is an entirely different animal, but I do not think you were asking about that. (??)

The people at the dealership knew exactly zip about any of this stuff. Plus, the "build your own" thing on the Toyota site, it is bogus. The vehicles aren't that easy to get and good luck, much less getting a custom configuration. Far as I could see, that was just a sham which tries to match up what you want with a model that is available, which might be if you ordered it in a common configuration. Well, as of 2017 anyway.

Alright then ?

The “fake leather” seats are called Softex and they are amazing. I normally do what I can to buy cloth seats, but the tan Softex seats that came with mine are indestructible and simple to clean. My dog runs around on them and they look trashed. I just wipe them down with a paper towel and they look new.

I just wish they had a cooling function to make them perfect. And yes I’m in the southwest where black Softex would be awful.

That’s it, I couldn’t think of the name. My color (silver) was only available with the black softex. If it came with some other I would have gone with the Premium.

What is your year and color scheme?

BTW I’m pretty happy with the fabric seats.

2021 SR5 Premium white/tan. It looked like a granny car when I bought it, but the black TRD rims and blackout badge kit transformed it completely. Looks very sporty now.

Ain’t gonna lie; I got premium simply to flex the “TRD” badge on the headrest (meaning “show off” for some geezers here).

Fabric would have been fine. Added bonus was it was comfortable and durable for camping/ off-roading trips.

I’ve had so many interiors that cracked or smelled like an old shoe, I’m ok with never going back to “genuine” leather.

I had leather seats in an F150 and one day put a towel on the seat after putting my boat on the trailer with wet shorts. Even with a towel the leather was ruined. I’ve owned leather since, but not in a truck. I’ll never have leather in any sort of recreation vehicle other than a sports car. Even then I prefer fake leather or cloth.

With the PRO suspension no KDSS is needed.
It’s more stable and the truck feels more planted to the road than a KDSS equipped 4R.

Compared my PRO to my friend’s ORP with KDSS and the PRO can do tight interstate exits faster by about 10mph.

LOL......I'm not sure many people will agree with your statement..

That wasn't my experience when test driving all the models extensively. Plus the KDSS had more axle articulation off-road.

I also have a very good handling sports car, so I do know what a good handling car feels like.

You can't put KDSS on the Pro ether way. That's the big difference between a OR and Pro.

The Pro is a stable truck and has a full fixed sway bar so its going to handle fine.
Is KDSS needed? Depends, for a top heavy 4R (roof top tent and the like) KDSS is going to handle much better. Also for a parkway driver it will/should handle the curves better. I also like the articulation you get from KDSS, though it's not an advantage over the PRO.

Unless you are testing on a closed test track with a experienced race car driver and using the exact same tires i think ill trust the experts and majority on the advantages of KDSS.

I personally have felt a decent difference in handling with KDSS, especially on high speed slightly bumpy and curvy roads. But i have also felt the difference when off roading not having the PRO's extra clearance.

KDSS undoubtedly handles better, but I drove two before I bought my non-KDSS and was able to get them to both make suspension noise that I’d prefer to not listen to. I assume it would get worse over time and I’ll be replacing parts because I cannot stand loose or noisy suspensions.

I got them to rattle pulling in a rough curb entrance at a 45 degree angle. The one I bough without KDSS made no noises ever during the drive, and I was trying pretty hard.

We did a direct comparison and at the end swapped trucks for a week. Both my friend (who owns the ORP + KDSS) came to the same conclusion and we both reached way higher speeds in tight curves with the PRO.

Not sure if owning a good handling sports car makes a direct comparison between two trucks more believable...but I own a mid engine Porsche two seater that I also drive on race tracks to check that box for you.

That must have been fun/cool.

Curious, same tire and specifications? The majority of handling is in the tires. I could probably double my cornering capabilities with the right tire.

The full sway bar on the PRO will always give 100% so there is some consistency advantages there.

I guess we'll agree to disagree.

Your signature is why I mentioned the sports car. I also drive on racetracks in my sports car.
